The Kindness Of Death

Normally is you are mad or sad you don’t talk to people nicely. If something is making people so mad or sad we act a different way then we would if we were as happy as can be. Normally when you think of Death you think he is scary or mean but Death demonstrates his gentle, kind, and caring side throughout the story. In The Book Thief By Markus Zusak set in the 1940’s during the time of Nazi Germany. There is a character, who is like the narrator, and that person is Death. Death shows that he is kind because he shows gentleness, sorrow, and compassion throughout the whole story. Death shows his gentleness in a few different ways. He shows so much compassion and emotion with Liesel because he has followed her path from before her main story began. Right after Liesel's brother dies. That is when Death starts to follow Liesel's story. When he states, “I wanted to say: “I’m sorry, child.” But that is not allowed.” (13). Death truly feels for Liesel and is truly sorry for her but his presence can’t be known so he can’t say anything. As a part of his job he is just an observer he can’t interfere no matter how much he wants to. So even though he may feel compassion for them he can’t talk or interfere. Just be in the background watching. Most people view Death as a dark and sometimes scary thing. But for Death to show love and compassion to just a normal human shows a lot about his character and that he actually cares. When the last bomb hit Himmel Street a lot of it was destroyed with barely anything left. Death was there picking up the bodies of the Steiners he kissed all of the kids on the cheek. “ And the Steiners’, I ran my fingers through Barbara's lovely combed hair, I took the serious look from Kurt’s serious face, and one by one, I kissed the smaller ones good night.”(530). That shows how much compassion he has for the souls he picks up and that it is not just a job for him but it shows that he cares. He followed everyone throughout their lifetime some more closely than others but he was still there. He has seen them go through struggles and successes. But for him to take his time to go to each of the kids and kiss their cheek before he took them for good shows that he cared for them. He could have been ignorant and took the body felt nothing and just kept doing that each and every time but he didn’t. This shows why and how Death is
