Based on author, Michael Shaara’s award winning novel, The Killer Angels, the film The Battle of Gettysburg made its debut on screen in the United States, on October 8, 1993. The film vividly depicts the epic three day battle of Gettysburg. Nearly identical to the novel, the film’s main focus is on the experiences of General Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain and Brig. When it comes to history, nothing can be one-hundred percent accurate, and this was the case with the film The Battle of Gettysburg. The film does its best as possibly as it can by getting as close to being accurate, which will have many historians agree with. It stands outside of the cliché war movie genres that are too often distributed by Hollywood. The film is easy to follow because the story itself is simple and straight forward about the battle. Due to the movie being straight-forward and completely and only following the battle, there is no outside information given on what is going on away from the mega-scaled battle. As I watched the film the first time, I did not notice this fact until the second time I watched it with an “opened eye”, rather than trying to find differences between the novel and film. Even though it may not cover every minute of every battle at Gettysburg, the attention to detail the film does provide is done to perfection. The Battle of Gettysburg cost fifteen million in production and earned nearly forty-three million worldwide (boxofficemojo.com) and earned an eighty on a scale out of one-hundred.
