James was an island in a sea of humanity. His face, shoulders and entire mid-section drooped as far as physically possible. A number of heavy breaths emanated from his lungs. A succession of sighs escaped from his lips. Clearly, “the Kid” as he was known in the Fight One locker room needed some cheering up. He wasn’t going to get it.

Edwards had begged, borrowed and dealt for the cross promotional matchup against 4CW invader, Lord Raab. Not many of his colleagues thought he had a fighting chance against the monstrous German. A number of names were rumored to have been brought to the attention of Fight One management as a substitute for Edwards. Now, in the deep freeze of a professional shunning, James was going to be taught a lesson: know your place and stay there.

Oh James would stay in place all night, but not in the way that the veterans had hoped. The stubborn little shit sat and pouted during the victory acclamation when Myke Adams walked into the room victorious after the main event. He sat in silence when Filthy Ramirez made his interview rounds for the post show. Hell, he stayed still when Seth Daniels snapped a towel across the naked back of Vin Wesley and the rest of the locker room ran to separate the two when the big Hawaiian's boot caught the champion right in his “special purpose”.

One by one, the senior citizens of Fight One shuffled past the stoic “Burning Heart” and shook their heads. It was obvious he was waiting to be acknowledged, possibly even comforted. By now he should have gotten the message, but oh well if he was that thick then he couldn’t be helped.

Only one person acknowledged James that night, the custodian. Even he wasn’t in the mood to cheer James up.

“Lights out in five minutes. If you don’t get up to leave now then I’m going to go get security. They will make you leave”, said the crabby old
