In order to graduate from the University of Mary with a psychology degree, students must take a Senior Capstone, during which a volunteer experience must be completed. Volunteer experience must be completed because one of the key elements of the human service field is social change, which can occur through volunteer work. Not only is volunteer work a key element of the human service field, it also allows students to give back to the community and to grow in a way that might be out of one’s comfort zone. While giving back to the community is enough reason alone to do volunteer work, there are also a few added bonuses like it allows the individual to gain experience in certain work and can help create networking opportunities.
