The show has gained popularity as the years have gone on, People find it entertaining and some people find it irritating. Some critics argue that they exemplify strong family morals, transgender acceptance, interracial relationships and much more. One of the biggest things they have done is promote body image acceptance, “For much of the past 30 years, stick thin has been the aspirational body type, but as (some of) the Kardashians have shown, having a butt isn't something to be ashamed of.” The Kardashian family was different from all the other celebrity families because they are curvy and Armenian and 100% proud of it. To this day Kim still continues to promote body acceptance, for example in march she posted a completely nude selfie with two black bars to censor the photo. This photo caused some controversy but ultimately other celebrities stepped up to support Kim for always promoting body acceptance and her curves, setting a good example for young woman. Another contribution they have made is their support of interracial relationships, this has been introduced before in the industry but not as prominently as the Kardashians considering currently all of them (except one) are in an interracial relationship. On the show they have even touched upon racism and how it has affected them which sets a very good example for the people growing up watching this

Drunk, stupid, lazy, these are just a few of the words that popular culture has used to describe the Native American Indians. The so called “Spaghetti Westerns” were constantly painting these “savages” as less than human. Even John Wayne, who perhaps had more respect than most for Native Americans, still portrayed them in a negative connotation. One of Wayne’s most popular movies, McClintock, has the American Indians stating a party was fun but “no whiskey, so we go home.”…

Two perturbed reporters, Erin Cunningham and Serena Elavia both concur on how media such as photography and reality television can affect the health and well being of not only young girls and women, but the famous reality stars people religiously watch today. Cunningham and Elavia are able to agree and concentrate on three key points: views from the general public, poor behavior of the people behind the lens, and the potential health issues. According to author Erin Cunningham in “Our Photoshopping Disorder”, a former Hollywood marketing executive Seth Matlins always tried to vision the world through his daughter's eyes and conjectured what kind of woman she would one day become. Reality TV has been around since the late 1940’s when Allen Funt headlined a show called Candid Camera. This was followed in 1950 with a show named Truth or Consequences. The 1970’s had programs called Real People and That’s Incredible. These shows were, for the most part, considered wholesome entertainment that the entire family could watch and were quite tame in comparison to what is on television today. Reality TV exploded in the 2000’s and it remains one of the most popular genres in television.…

Kim Kardashian’s catapult into the business world and great success over the past decade makes her an ideal walking business model and one of much interest. The reasoning behind this study of Kim Kardashian is simply because her particular road to success is an uncommon one. We live in a society where certain behaviours and standards are forced upon us consciously and subconsciously. We are told that things must be done in a certain order, years of primary, secondary and tertiary education, graduate, get a job, get married, start a family and cease to exist. Kim Kardashian is the epitome of a successful business woman, she is a college dropout, not particularly talented in any skill and began her family before she was married.…

The Real, the Bad, and the Ugly by Cassie Heidecker is an interesting example of analyzing the reality TV epidemic and in addition to the people that view it. The author starts out by listing things that go into a reality TV production and things that happen in real life in order to state that these are two different things despite the idea that reality TV is supposed to be “real”. The mundanity of real life is emphasised here vs. the idea that reality TV is scripted and has a lot of extra work put into it to make reality TV more appealing to a broader audience. The author goes on to say that real life is boring which I thought was funny and a little ironic considering that later the author mentions that she is somebody who sets aside time…

In the readings assigned for this week Megan J. Lee and Leign Moscowitz’s expose of the Real Housewives of New York City in The “Rich Bitch” really stood out to me. The reading stood out to me because of the many conflicting attitudes and situations presented in the article. I personally have never watched the Real Housewives because I didn’t feel the need to watch wealthy grown women make a big deal out of the littlest things. It always seemed excessive and ridiculous to have these types of shows that were made to glaringly show off the completely random women’s wealth. However, this article shows that there is so much more to the show.…

In her essay “Getting Real With Reality TV,” Cynthia Frisby examines how Reality TV has became one of the most watched television programs. Frisby then discusses her beliefs that, while watching Reality TV programs, viewers tend to draw comparisons between themselves and the reality star. She then gathers a team of researchers who conduct surveys that ask simple questions about participants relationship with Reality TV, and the team performs a content analysis on these participants while they view certain Reality TV programs. Ultimately, she suggests that her research shows that almost all participants showed some type of comparison between themselves and the reality star. Throughout her essay, Frisby uses adequate amounts of evidence to support…
