Greenleaf, Kansas population of roughly 300, including the stray cats running the streets and cattle just beyond the highway. Settling in for the night with my sister, Zaina, in comfy pajamas and a hot cup of sleepytime tea. We finish up our last sip just as grandma gets done with her famous bedtime stories. Our favorite one about a puppy who lost his mom and trying to find his way home.This is how I began to understand our literary experience. As I interviewed my sister Zaina, it seemed to all come back. I was in that bedroom, I could smell the tea, feel the soft sheets, and hear grannies soothing voice as I drift away into sleep. Bedtime stories were the beginning of it all. Not only from grandma but also mom and dad reading us our favorite picture books such as Stella Luna and The Giving Tree. Because she first started her literacy though bedtime stories being told to her and mom and dad reading to her she believes this is a good way for her early english learners to begin their literacy as well. “We sometimes have storytime or read alouds, I read a variety of books ranging from The Three Little Pigs to The Hunger Games. I 've learned that it doesn 't matter the level of books I read to them. But that there are lessons to take from every story no matter the reading difficulty.” There are lessons to be learned from every book and in the urban education system it is not how fast you can read but that you are able to read, retain the information, and apply it into your life. With many talks I’ve had with my sister she make this point very important in the way she teaches her
