The Kandinsky Effect: Concert Report

The concert that I attended was Sac State Jazz Combo with the guest artist “The Kandinsky Effect”, on Tuesday October 13, 2015 at 8:00 pm. in the Capistrano Concert Hall. At the beginning of the concert the Sacramento State Jazz combo played a couple songs. In this group there were many performers with different instruments: Domenic Dalpez (baritone saxophone) , Jesse Crosson (trombone) , Aaron Smith (trumpet) , Randy Sandoli (piano) , Molly Redfield (bass) , Devan Kortan (guitar) , and Cameron Womack (drums). The songs that they played were: “Synchronous Dance”, “Untill We Meet Again”, and “On Our Way.” The performers from The Kandinsky Effect were: Warren Walker (saxophone and effects), Gael Petrina (bass and effects), and Caleb Dolister (drums) and they all played multiple songs. Their style of music was very different from anything that I have heard, it was a combination of jazz, rock, electronica, hip-hop and experimental sounds. They played the saxophone, bass, and drums but they also added some effects that completely changed the sound. In this piece the rhythm was both accelerando and ritardando. Sometimes the tempo would gradually speed up and sometimes it would slow down. The melody was disjunct, every instrument seems to be jumpy and difficult to play. Also the texture was polyphonic, with the effects, the performer was able to play more than one note at the same time. In this piece I believe the most prominent instruments were both the saxophone and the drums. These two instruments seemed to be the ones that stood out the most throughout the whole song.
