While blowing through the trumpet, he stands on a mountain with his left foot and in the middle of the sea with his right foot. In his left hand, Gabriel holds the key to the gates of heaven. The left side of the painting shows the ones that are being punished, who are struck by lightning which is in a zigzagged form. On the right side, Gabriel is giving rewards to those who have been faithful to God by putting a yellow light over their heads. The faithful ones are raising their hands in the air to praise Gabriel’s music and God’s mercy. Throughout the painting, Gabriel expands his jazzy aged music which explains the huge circles and waves. Gabriel’s trumpet signifies the jazz age which refers to the words of James Weldon Johnson, “The music which awakens all nations is the song of a bluesman or a famous trumpet …show more content…
Aaron Douglas was a phenomenal African-American man who directed his painting towards his African American community. As an African american society, most of us are lost, and we need to find our way back to our center where we can endure our bodies, minds and spirits. We are current victims of prejudice, violence, hatred, injustice and Douglas created his visual to inform us to have in God so that we can overcome evil. I will always come back to this painting because it allows me to draw closer to God and remain peaceful, so that I can be able to enjoy the future promise
