At this time he finds himself in command of 1st corps of the Union army which comprised itself of 8,000 men who were primarily infantry troops who had single shot high caliber rifles. Coming up the street were 80,000 men of the Army of Northern Virginia. The opposing General, Robert E. Lee, had served as the commandant of West Point Academy where he attended college. With the reality of such a large force marching into such a city unopposed and support troupes a day’s march away he chose to stand and fight. On this day he lost more than 70% of the men he had trained and drilled and looked into their eyes with purpose of why they were serving this republic.
