When I was the same age as Shaymus myself and my family went on a vacation to Las Vegas, the vacation was a never ending catastrophe because on our way back home our suitcase fell, in addition our car broke down and dizziness collided with me that it became a roller coaster of chaos. In fact, Shaymus endured endless catastrophes on his family vacation as well. During his vacation the realization that he is constantly wishing, he and his sister aren’t treated fairly and endless phone problems lead to him realizing that being a teenager is facing the motif of the roller coaster which is his life.

After graduation everyone will probably go play basketball, or sing, or start record labels, and I'll have to start all over - alone.”(Davis), and in the story is how shaymus feels about his life; He feels empty with all of the problems surrounding his life, and then having to endure his family vacation leaves him with the poignant desire to wish and the wishes further explain the motif which is to be back home, and for his birthday wish to become a reality. Also another one of his wishes is for his sister to have a better attitude and not be so loud. Those are his first wishes before the story begins, and once the story progresses he meets a girl but he doesn’t have the courage to give her a chance. Many themes that occur in this story are self-discovery. In the beginning of this story shaymus doesn’t know who he is that’s why those motifs are correlated with it, but in the end he discovers that “It’s the oldest story in the world. One day you’re seventeen and planning for someday. And then quietly and without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And that someday is yesterday. And this is your life.” (Scott), and this quote reflects those motifs in the story as well as the first theme explored. The next theme that is explored is family. Family is a major part in this story. This family faces conflicts like the dad being different, his sister having to endure therapy and his family changing. Family in this story is a big part because of the vacation and the catastrophes endured during it. Those are the two themes represented in this story. Another is the conflict that shaymus is facing with himself.
