Ephesians 2:8 says “For by grace you have been saved through faith, this is not you own doing; it is the gift of God.” We are saved or find salvation through God and God alone because grace is the “undeserved, unmerited, and loving action of God in human existence through the ever present Holy Spirit.” there is nothing that we can do turn earn grace, no amount of good works that can ever wash away who we are as sinners. In fact John Wesley taught that there are no good works apart from and that even the good through ourselves is not truly good. It is by grace alone that we are brought to the knowledge that there is a divide between ourselves and God and that there is a need to turn away from our sin. Prevenient grace calls and when finally become aware of that is when we begin the process of repentance, justification, regeneration, and finally sanctification or as they are better known, the evangelical doctrine. These represent the journey of grace through faith, a journey we in United Methodism call “the Way of Salvation”. Wesley taught that “everyone descended from (Adam) comes into the world spiritually dead, dead to God, wholly ‘dead in’ and entirely void of the life of God” In order to find our way to salvation we must be brought back to life in God through the Holy Spirit and this process all begins with repentance.
