The Journey Of Eugenie Clark's Whale Shark

Improved Essays
Eugenie Clark entered the male dominated world of marine biology. In the early 1940s, she participated in her first underwater dive. Shortly after, she carried out several more and the Navy presented her the invitation to study in the Southern Seas. While in this region, she viewed over three hundred unique species of fish, which were basically nonexistent during this time. Only after a few years, Clark journeyed hundreds of feet beneath the ocean’s surface to examine sleeping sharks that were inside underwater caves off of the coast of Mexico. An amazing part of Clark’s Journey was when she came face to face with a pregnant shark. During this occurrence, Eugenie dissected the whale shark and found out that it had three hundred offspring.

In the early 1920’s, a group of dauntless Norwegian sailors attempted a voyage no one had ever successfully mastered. Through the rushing, diligent, and harsh waters of the cold Antarctic these men voyaged to the isolated island of Bouvet. As this accomplishment was exciting enough, the zoologist on board, Ditlef Rustad, discovered a fish like no other vertebrae ever seen. The Chaenocephalus aceratus, as it was deemed, changed thoughts of evolution with its physical appearance, defied rules of genes birth and death and allowed for an entire species to grow under an ecosystem otherwise not thought to exist in the extreme conditions of the Antarctic. As it has been introduced, this White Blooded creature was a mystery to scientists around the…

The article by PHYS.ORG (2014) was written about the new dolphin species of Victoria, Australia, called the Burrunan dolphin. This species was recently discover by Dr. Kate Charlton-Robb, 3 years ago, in 2011 (PHYS.ORG, 2014). Although not a lot is known about them, there is a concern surrounding the conservation of Burrunan dolphins (PHYS.ORG, 2014). The population size of the species is very small and according to Dr. Charlton-Robb, for each region there are less than 100 dolphins that can contribute to the gene pool of the next generation (PHYS.ORG, 2014). This lack in genetic diversity and the fact the individual populations are so isolated leads to the worry that the species will not be able to sustain itself and that conservation efforts…
