It is beautiful because Mom said it was beautiful. In reality, it is a barely surviving tree and its life doesn’t have to be positive. The symbol could be about how Mom insisted everything be enjoyable and adventurous.
Of course, that’s assuming there’s a symbol at all. The Joshua tree might be something young Jeannette saw a long time ago and later consciously decided to give meaning. Jeannette grew to be an exceptional writer but this is her real-life story and perfect symbolism doesn’t simply show up. The Joshua tree doesn’t necessarily mean anything if she didn’t expect it
