Homosexuality in the comic book world has been been a pressing topic in the industry as of late. With the growing push for LGBTQ reprenstation in mainstream media, it has become an even bigger discussion. With all the other major media, comics have been very involved in the push for inclusiveness. There have been two same-sex marriages on the covers of the Astonishing X-men and Archie, and the first transgender comic book character, the roommate of Batgirl, Alysia Yeoh, was introduced. It seems like gay characters are new to comic books, but they actually appeared as early as the ‘60s and ‘70s in European, Asian, and indie comic-books. Just not so much in the huge American Marvel comics.

At the same time Batman’s main villain, The Joker began to change. Taking on more feminine and homosexual tones, mirroring the rise of homosexuality in America. In the 1970s the Joker was clearly straight. Even having a crush on Black Canary. Theses feminine are clear in the 1986 series The Dark Knight Returns. This version of the Joker also appeared in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth by Grant Morrison. Even with all this, the Joker never comes out as a gay character. These feminine characteristics, are used to make him seem more …show more content…
For example, Terry Berg in Green Lantern, who first appeared in October 2000 as an assistant to the current Green Lantern Kyle Rayner, had crush on Kyle. This caused him to question his identity and sexuality. After accepting his sexuality, he began dating another character, David. In issue 154, they even kissed. After this kiss, however, Terry was the victim of a hate crime that left him in a coma for two issues. DC also introduced lesbian characters, like Renee Montoya, a character in the Batman comics, introduced in 1992 in issue 475. For ten years she only appeared in a small number of scenes, but in 2003 with the beginning of a new series, Gotham Central this changed. The new comic took a deeper look at the daily lives of the police officers of Gotham City. This opened the window for Renee's struggle with her

Watters applies her own personal aspects and obstacles that she has overcome to her work, specifically incorporating LGBTQ+ themes as a form of safe space for youth everywhere. “I’m working at a publisher that lets me do the kind of comics that I love to do. Which is comics with marginalized creators and marginalized characters telling queer stories” (Watters). Comics with this theme would be ones such as Steven Universe (both the comic and the show), Adventure Time, Teen Dog, and Lumberjanes. By showcasing LGBTQ+ minorities, Watters deliberately uses her work to address principles that she wishes she had seen growing up.…

Although it is much different from the average children’s hero story, presenting it as an innocent kid friendly comic normalizes it. Modern kids comics featuring less accepted lifestyles are pushing us into a future of acceptance. Exposing children to this type of story can normalize the idea of two men being together, and other relationships that are not yet considered “normal” by many people around the world, resulting in a world with less hate. The more children who are raised with the idea of homosexuality being normal, the less homophobia we will have in our future. When kids are taught that homosexuality is normal and nothing to be ashamed of, we will see less kids using homophobic slurs to insult their classmates, in turn lowering the amount of homophobic adults and homophobic areas such as Laramie, around the…

Harley Quinn is not the main antagonist of the batman franchise, but she is still a villain since she steals, kills, and terrorizes cities. Harley Quinn was not a villain in the beginning of the story, instead she was a psychiatrist at the Arkham Asylum. Harley is made into a villain after she falls in love with a maniac, the hero’s enemy, the Joker. “Harleen fell in love with the villain, broke him out of Arkham and devoted her life to making him happy and spreading his bloody brand of mayhem. ”(“Harley Quinn” 2017)…

Keating Erin M. describes women in comic books as “invariably either plot devices (there to be rescued) or sex symbols (all plunging necklines and endless legs).” The representation of the female characters in Watchmen reveals a conservative, heterosexual framework operating as a foundation for the moral ambiguity and the displacement of traditional superhero tropes enacted by the revisionist aspects of the text. This article is providing strong references about women’s sexuality, which is very relatable to the discussion of women’s sexuality in watchmen. Like Wonder Woman, Silk Specture is both hero and sex symbol.…

African Americans find their fictional portrayals as the goofy best friend to the white main character, furthermore, people who are gay see their portrayal as the sassy gay friend or the butch female just looking for fun. No matter what group someone identifies with, the media stereotypes them in a negative way. In Amy Zimmerman’s “It Ain’t Easy Being Bisexual on TV” and Amy Stretton’s “Appropriating Native American Imagery Honors No One but…

As with any artistic medium, graphic novels provide a lens through which the reader can view the world. That graphic novels incorporate both text and image enhances the ability of the creator to impose his or her ideas upon the reader, whether or not intentional. In Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, the correlation between the role women play and their physical appearance is striking. To clarify, though Miller does place females in important roles, such as Robin and Commissioner Yindel, he gives them characteristics which separate them from the ‘average woman’ of the time. As aforementioned, both Carrie Kelly and Ellen Yindel occupy crucial roles in the telling of Batman’s story, yet exhibit traits which distinguish them as…

The 1990s were an era of increasing recognition of homosexuality in broadcast media, so much so that scholar Ron Becker referred to the period as “the gay 1990s”, as programs increasingly began to depict gay characters both explicitly and implicitly. Since the emergence of such characters the representation of members of the LGBTQ+ community has increased and broadened, which is especially evident when comparing the “Men on Film” sketch from the pilot of FOX’s In Living Color in 1990, and ABCs How to Get Away with Murder (2014-present). The depictions of LGBTQ+ characters in these programs represent the evolution and synthesis of audience targeting in increasingly competitive industrial environments and in the increasingly tolerant sociopolitical…

For example after being interrogated and beaten by Batman, the Joker escaped shortly after. And once he would escape he would bounce right back to committing shocking crimes. The joker was also deceitful, for example, one time The Joker robbed the Gotham National City Bank and manipulated his group of thugs into helping him and told them they would all divide the money up when they got back. Instead, The Joker killed his group of thugs and kept all of the money for himself. While robbing the bank he all dressed up as and used the alias Bozo the clown.…

The character of Batman is considered to be one of the world’s classic and modern day superhero. His story has taken on many different forms from comics, to TV series, and to today’s modern cinematography. However, I want to discuss the story of Batman and its famous characters based off of the 2000’s version of the current films. We have all come to know Batman as a vigilante who fights bad people as he conceals his true identity as Gotham’s renowned playboy and millionaire, Bruce Wayne. I want to use the personas of Bruce Wayne, Batman, and the well-known villains of this universe because of how they relate to the many ideas used in psychology.…

I have chosen the topic of sexualization of women superheroes in comics, mainly focusing on the Marvel universe. Due to the rise in female readership, Marvel claims to have introduced several characters.…

Phase Three of the highly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is drawing to a close with three films scheduled for this year, three for 2018 (one of which is the highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War part 1), and two in 2019. At this stage, there is only one movie scheduled after Phase Three, a supposed Spiderman sequel scheduled in 2019. With the end of the arguably largest phase of the MCU near, a lot of the major actors such as Chris Evans (Captain America) have been rumoured to be leaving behind their famous roles. This leaves space wide open for some of the other beloved Marvel heroes to get a moment to shine on the silver screen. An obvious choice for this is the Young Avengers.…

Borrowing from psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus’ statement about Psychology, it can be said that “the Joker has a long past but a short history”. The lack of childhood history makes it difficult to fully understand and acknowledge the genesis of the character’s many faults and traits. However, we may just empathise with Alfred the Butler and show our agreement when he says, “Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with.…

The Joker has a clear insight into Batman, he knows what makes him tick, he knows his weaknesses, because the Batman and Joker are one. They are each other's opposites but each other's halves as well. What is interesting to note is that at the end of the movie when Batman, chooses to let the Joker live, the Joker is upside down, where the Batman is standing up correcting, the final depiction of how they are opposites, but also part of each other. Throughout the movie, the Joker stresses how the Batman completes him, and every time the Batman ignores the Joker's comments. The Joker is…
