It taught me more about what that picture I see in textbooks is really about and about John Carlos’s life. I love reading about a person's personal life and their struggles. John Carlos’s story really showed me how blacks were treated in the North and the South and even by other countries around the world. It also taught me how something as small as sports had a huge impact on his and many others lives. I can relate to him about being an athlete and knowing that is the only place that made someone feel free, but also see on a minor scale of course all the drama that comes with it. I being a white female never had to go through what John or the others had to got through, but I still felt being a female I had to prove myself to the boys. I had to be tough and not whimpy like everyone thought girls were I had to hold my own. Reading his story taught me, it is never just one person's struggle and goal it is usually greater than
