The results she received made Granny Weatherall not rely on anybody to help her out because she took control over her life. In “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” Mrs. Weatherall is a strong but feeble character. As a character granny Weatherall prides herself with the struggles she had faced in her lifetime. Granny Weatherall delineates herself to anything because she has been through the worst already. However, the quote “Get along now, take your schoolbooks and go. There’s nothing wrong with me” () this quote indicates, she is very old because in the beginning of the story she is being examined by a doctor. In the very end of the story it is describing granny Weatherall’s death “I’m not going, Cornelia. I’m taken by surprise I can’t go” (265) so this explains Granny Weatherall is feeble because she cannot take charge of one thing, which is her death. Additionally, in “A good man is hard to find” the nameless grandma is a static character throughout the whole story. The grandma was a static character because she did not alter her character. As a character the nameless does not change in the story, remaining being the same manipulative, self centered, and a dishonest character. For example, “The grandmother didn’t want to go to Florida” (493) so her family did not go to Florida because of her. “If you don’t shut up, we won’t go anywhere.” “It would be very educational for them, the grandmother murmured.” These quotes show how manipulative and selfish she is into convincing her own son to do …show more content…

The Grandmother in A Good Man is Hard to Find In the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, she uses the character of the grandmother to present the cons of self-centeredness. Although it is very obvious the grandmother lacks self-awareness, she still considers herself a good woman. The appearance of the grandmother described throughout this short story is shown to the reader as an old, southern, Caucasian woman. The way she spoke and how she chose to dress are both indications that she does indeed consider herself a lady although her unflattering personality did not match.…

This adds to the irony of the story because the grandmother was supposed to symbolize “good” people in society. Yet it took a gun being held to her head, and her entire family being killed for her to finally realize that even she was flawed. Meaning she is no better or worse than anyone else. O’Connor then goes on to depict the grandmother as a “good” person though her actions. The grandmother acts like a “good” person on the road by “...would not let the children throw the box and the peanut butter napkins out the window” (O’Connor 140).…

Strong contrast between vigorous efforts made by her and actual helpfulness through listed activities, reveal how idle she is: “she had aided her father in his indifference to his professional duties, counseling him that his livings were as much his individual property as the estates of his elder brother were the property of the worthy peer”, “She had encouraged her mother in her idleness”, “She had encouraged and fostered the follies of her sister, though she was always willing, and often able, to protect her form their probable result”, and “She had done her best, and had thoroughly succeeded in spoiling her brother, and turning him loose upon the world an idle man without a profession, and without a shilling that he could call his own”. Furthermore, along with other family members, there is also a clear mention about miss Stanhope (“ a clever woman, able to talk on most subjects, and quite indifferent as to what the subject was”). As shown above, all the family members are presented instable and to lack elements form a regular structure of family. The theme of indifference is constantly recurred and it has contributed to the overall mood of the passage.…
