There is a similar situation that occurs in the story where the kids’ parents and grandmother urge them to learn their mother language rather than the new “scientific languages” which they are keener

Although immigration to Canada is joyous for some, many immigrants risk a basic part of their culture when they decide to travel to Canada. To begin with, immigration to Canada makes individuals lose their cultural identity and nationality. When people immigrate at a young age, they quickly assimilate into the mainstream culture. Children and even adults no longer feel pride for their nationality, and instead steer away from their usual traditions. This leads to a loss of cultural practices and celebrations.…

Multiculturalism is another huge factor which changed Canada and became part of its identity. Multiculturalism can be referred to as, “ an ideological aspiration celebrating diversity”(Hyman, Meinhard & Shields, 2011, pg.3). The short extract from ‘Smoke, lilies and Jade’ by Richard Bruce Nugent is from a Bildungsroman play foretelling the plight of Alex - a 19-year-old, black, male facing internal conflicts and confusion in regards to his sexuality. Therefore, taking this context into consideration, the extract naturally issues an underlying, thematic patterning of fragmentation, uncertainty, and tension. From a close reading, these themes spill out through the content, the form, as well as the diction. In more specific terms, it is achieved through literary and stylistic devices in the following ways; an abstract stream of consciousness disfigured shifts between time and setting, the disparity between an exterior and interior dialogue, and finally, the rebellious…

Is it a natural occurrence in nature for the youth to regard their ancestors as merely artefacts of a generation long gone, remnants of a society brought up by different social values and morals. Where have those beliefs of decades ago gone, where the elderly were considered oracles of wisdom and knowledge? Has the Internet connected us so extensively to the point that we no longer need to know of our own history and heritage? I can say confidently now that I myself was one of those people, always hearing but never listening, never fully engaging myself amongst those history lessons during Christmas lunch, never wishing to learn, never wishing to fully grasp an understanding.…
