I believe Radcliffe is trying to display that peace can be found in difficult times through the slow paced narrative. In many places in the text Radcliffe describes beautiful and calming landscapes. Radcliffe could have chosen to continue with the narrative but instead, he described these beautiful places in significant detail. He also shows how this scenery calms Ellena in her difficult adventures. Also fully describing the scenery allows for the readers to calm as well. Readers are no longer on the edge of their seats waiting to see what happens to the characters when reading of the beautiful setting. Readers can picture and appreciate the setting Radcliffe is describing while being distracted abut the situation the characters are in. The Italian is a text about a kidnapping and The Castle of Otranto is a text about a tyrannical Prince. At a closer look at both texts there are some similarities. In both texts at least one parent against a marriage between two characters that care for one another. In The Italian Vivaldi’s parents are against a marriage and in The Castle of Otranto Theodore’s father is against a pairing between him and Matilda. Also, Ellena, Isabella and Matilda get presented with an undesirable offer of marriage. In both texts marriage is very important and complicates the lives of the main characters.
