The healthcare professionals can make meaningful contact with people from different ethnic groups to improve knowledge around their health beliefs and behaviors, and this will help in understanding the problems they face. In the United States, the gap between the rich and the poor is so wide that the zip codes are being used to allocate resources and goods. The zip codes, therefore can determine the life expectancy. For example, a child born in the poorest South-side of Chicago is likely to suffer many medical problems as compared with a child born in the rich neighborhoods of Chicago. Although many factors may play roles here, but the biggest one is availability of resources, and this is inequality. The healthcare professionals must be cautious when making judgement so that this set of people will not be stereotyped.
The Papadopoulos, Tilki, and Taylor model of cultural competence makes the study of health inequalities as an integral part of their model. Equal portion is ascribed to both culture and structure in health inequalities. According to Papadopoulos (2006), health inequalities occurs when different groups defined by their social and demographic characteristics, such as income, education or ethnicity, have differences in access to health services or differences in health status.
