A Call To Change
Women around the world age 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car accidents, war and malaria (Violence against women). One in five women on U.S. college campuses have experienced sexual assault (Kessler). These statistics should shock one to the core, but does it? This statistic, one in five, is a statistic that students at college campuses have heard over and over. What these students haven’t heard is that they and their college administrators can change this. There is an urgency for sexual assault policies to change on campus in order for students to have a safe educational environment.

This explains why sexual assault is widely considered to be the most underreported violent crime in the United States. Survivors have stated some of the reasons they did not report their sexual assaults. The survivors said they were in fear of reprisal, they did not think their case was important enough to respond to, they had a belief that the police would not do anything to help, they did not want family or others to know, they feared there was a lack of evidence and many more reasons. Due partially to low reporting rates, only 9 percent of all rapists get prosecuted. Only 5 percent of cases lead to a felony conviction. Only 3 percent of rapists will spend a day in prison and the other 97 percent walk free (Reporting Rates). If we implemented a system where survivors could feel comfortable with reporting the crimes that took place we would have a community with less rapists and happier and safer people. “‘I’ve seen this in every single case. The victim lose friends or becomes a social pariah. If you report on a really small campus, it’s really difficult to re-integrate after you report,’ says Bruno” (Gray, “Why Don 't Campus…”). Often, survivors of rape are thought of less of victims then the rapists are – and the actual victims are blamed because friends and peers sympathize more with the man than the woman.…

While more than half of sexual assaults against women of college age occur off campus, on campus assaults are a problem that college and universities can and should do more to address. The best statistics show there is a correlation between 3 factors, alcohol use, sorority membership, and class status, and sexual assault on campus. To combat these trends colleges and universities need to address these factors while taking into account that any measures they take not simply move the problem from campus to off campus locations. This means that the measures taken should be centered on raising awareness, encouraging responsibility, and holding offenders accountable in a just way, while also addressing the campus code of conduct.…

Rape Culture on Campus I have chosen to write my essay on sexual assault on college campuses in the United States. This is an issue that affects a specific group of people; a large percentage of men and women are attacked every year on college campuses, having countless negative effects on the education and overall lives of these victims. It is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed nationwide in order to prevent further sexual assaults. This is an issue that can be studied from several sides of anthropology, for example educational applied anthropology, and feminist anthropology. A feminist anthropologist specifically would be able to explore the female perspective, knowing that she has a one-in-five chance of being raped while on…

However, whether this crime is increasing or decreasing is up for debate. Based on statistics, the numbers widely vary across public Universities. University of Texas at Austin’s crime reports have been increasing, while Texas Tech’s has stayed mostly the same, and University of Texas at Arlington’s reports have shown a decreased over time. Multiple aspects could be majorly affecting the number of reports, such as: programs and organizations on campus that help to decrease the problem, current cultural aspects and increased feminine empowerment that lead to reports being made more often, or that police and the Universities cover up the true numbers in one way or another. Other academic studies have also shown that rape is a persistent problem…

Currently the United States has one of the highest rape rate among countries, every 107 seconds, someone in the United States is sexually assaulted with the number of victims being 293,000 each year (Kahn). With many of the attacks being unreported and unrecognized sexual assault is said to be a silent- violent epidemic. The causes and reasoning behind sexual assault are entrenched into our society. Richardson and Shields make a point saying students are not the victims and “rape culture” but the victims of a damaged institution that contributes to risks of sexual assault ( Richardson and Shields 27). Women are staggeringly more likely to be the victim of sexual assault, while men are almost always are the perpetrators.…
