In society today, young people are engaging sexual activity with little knowledge/understanding in regards to undesirable pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Young people who engage in sexual activity place themselves as well as others in danger. Young people should be furnished with the proper education in regards teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases to help foster open minds and communication to the issue that is not often talked about in homes and schools because of its sensitivity. Providing young people with the knowledge and skills with respect to sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy will empower them to make better choices and enable them to live healthier lives. Have you defined the problem accurately? What is the problem as you see it in this situation?
Mrs. Taylor: The problem as I see it, is that I violated HIPPA and placed my job (career) on the line by informing my friend that her daughter tested positive for HIV. This was tough for me on multiple levels. I helped raise (female’s name) and have been friends with her mother for years. This is personal to me because (female’s name) came to me first and not her mother.
2. How would you define the problem if you stood on the other side of the fence?
Mrs. Taylor: From the teenager’s perspective, I violated her privacy rights. I should have removed myself from this situation being that I knew (teenager’s name) personally and her mother as my friend once I found out why (female’s name) was there.
3. How did this situation occur in the first place?
Mrs. Taylor: This situation occurred due to me not handling it appropriately. Regardless of the patient, I should always be professional. Teenager’s name had unprotected sex and as a result tested positive for HIV. Because I knew her mother personally, I informed her of the situation.
