The Importance Of The Environment

Decent Essays
The sun sets much too quickly for anyone to go looking for that one missing sock, let alone consider global catastrophes that might arise in thirty years. After all, abilities of human perception are limited. Nevertheless, is that an excuse to ignore the concerns of future generations? Is it acceptable to disregard the pressing issues of tomorrow? Is sleep really an option when you know that you might have the honor of being labeled the generation that simply shrugged indifferently; the ones who accepted the termination of an entire biosphere? I didn’t think so. You would have to be out of your right mind to be satisfied with the concept of ending the world as we know it, unless of course your conscience was completely distorted or unconscious.
The time has come to wake from the prolonged slumber, the dream in which anything can be done without repercussions. As Isaac Newton phrased so eloquently: “for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.” Therefore, tarnishing the environment benefits no one and even subtracts from the campaign for general public health. What you might think to be a single piece of litter could very well end up

As studies would support, children are most impressionable, which would in turn suggest that certain values can easily be instilled at such a time. Once the mind is properly prioritized, the need to tell someone “stop littering, for your own sake” will no longer be necessary, for picking up for yourself is simply a habit. It will be just as simple as naturally turning off the tap, as opposed to spontaneously leaving the water running as you proceed to step away from the sink; or turning off a light to a room that no one is occupying. This newly molded mindset could prevent current disasters exacerbated by sizable corporations. Such a value, however, must be properly

In No Impact Man, Colin Beavan discusses many important topics, one of which is about trash. This topic got my interest because we see it everywhere, Colin goes into detail and discusses a lot of facts about it. An interesting observation was made regarding the black color of trash bags, that the reason trash bags are black instead of transparent is because people do not or cannot deal with seeing what is inside of them. Another related topic that always gets my concerns is recycling our waste. There are a lot of people that don’t recycle and just don’t care.…

Nonetheless, unlike how issues concerning stormwater and rainwater are viewed as “significant,” issues relating to littering are not. There is an immoderate amount of waste that can be found in the laneways of Melbourne due to improper disposal of waste products. In countless laneways and streets, coffee cups, used tissues, half-eaten foods, gum wrappers, and several other rubbish. Although there are rubbish bins that were found located in quite a number of locations, and signs stating ‘No Dumping’(see figure 6), it is evident that there is quite a number of people who choose to avoid using these bins and decide to disobey this rule. However, the amount of rubbish seems to differ highly depending on how frequently the laneway was found.…

An outlet mall in Southern California was full of shoppers, entering and exiting the various stores. As groups of people left the food court around lunch hour, they sipped their coffee. Once they finished their drinks, despite the nearby trash cans, they dropped their cups onto the ground and casually walked off. This is simply one example of littering in our society, but if this issue is not resolved, the ecosystem will suffer greatly. Victorian Litter Action Alliance’s “Litter Statistics Fact Sheet” stresses that as a result of littering, “1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine animals die each year after becoming entangled in or ingesting litter”, which reveals the major impact littering has on our ecosystem (1).…

Our big blue world is dying and we are the cause. Human beings are wasteful creatures: people overstock their fridge with food that they will just toss out because it was left in their too long, some countries ( the USA) won’t invest into renewable energy because they are afraid of losing their oily money, then we make things that are more harmful than good like Whole Foods already peeled organic oranges that come in a decent size clear plastic container that cost about six dollars. Humans take from the earth and every day we use up more and more natural resources. And sooner rather than later we are going to fight with each other over water, space and may be even clean air. So just like Jonathan Swift, author of the essay, A Modest Proposal,…

I also believe that environmental degradation is also very real since with the development of new technology, people are now producing more waste than ever before. Rivers are being polluted, habitats are being destroyed and we are slowly running out of fresh water. Also the population is growing (it is expected to be about 9 billion by 2050!) so the more people in the world, the more food that needs to be produces, the more cars that are going to be driving and polluting the air, and the more waste that is going to go into landfills and oceans. That is all scary to think about, since 2050 is going to come around during my life time (hopefully), but most people (including me) are not willing to change their lifestyle for the well-being of the environment.…

Over the course of the semester, we have discussed the negative consequences resulting from the way we, as a society, dispose of our garbage. Most of our trash generally ends up in landfills where harmful chemicals are washed off exposing surrounding areas to harmful pollutants which are then able to cause extensive damage to both the environment and the species which inhabit the area. This method of waste disposal, while convenient for both major businesses and individual civilians alike, has already proven detrimental to the planet and its many species, and has called for a change in the way we manage and dispose of these toxic materials. “Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things,” answers that call by providing a number of feasible solutions and changes we can make, not only how we discard our trash, but also how we can avoid the need to create any more.…

    Why Is Littering Wrong

Littering is a very important law for many good reasons. One example of why littering is a terrible thing is because it doesn’t look good for your community. People who go and look for houses in your community might not want to move into your community because they do not want to be looked at by other people as living in a gross community. If visitors of the community visit that place once, they probably might not want to go back. Trash pick up also cost a lot of money too.…

As Americans continue to live prosperous lives, we diminish our natural recourses and environment around us. We will not understand the importance of our Earth until it’s too late. As an American citizen, I can say myself that I am very stubborn when it comes to change. Although I believe if we were more aware of the dire consequences we would alter our lifestyle; starting with the little things for example, turning the faucet off while brushing our teeth, recycling more often, and picking up trash we find on the ground. As days pass by we continue to ignore the warnings from our scientists and the signs around us.…
