There is no denying that within the United States, gun accessibility is one of the most controversial topics that impacts political, economic, and social aspects across the board. The debate has existed since the 1990’s but with recent media exposure, and contributions from globalization, the debate has increased amongst the general public. If there is ever a time for the gun regulation and access problem to be adopted into public policy, it is now. Gun accessibility problems and its effect on gun violence can be effectively explained through its process from condition to problem, causation, tractability, severity, and more. The people within this category are often identified with the Republican political party because a more advanced and strict gun regulation would mean more government involvement, which is something most conservatives disagree with. A major unofficial actor within this policy problem is the National Rifle Association, or NRA. They have been a key organization against gun reform and have often associated themselves with the conservatives (Sugarmann 9). The arguments against gun reform often reference the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution (Sugarmann 12). However, they seem to ignore the first half of the amendment that includes a militia, and protection of a free state. In today’s society, one would not need to protect themselves from a U.S government domestic attack. Additionally, the Constitution was written during a time where the main and only firearms being considered where muskets and small rifles. The framers could not have imagined a world with machine guns and other assault weapons being created. The other two main arguments against gun regulation is for hunting and self defense. Some considers hunting, a staple of American culture. However, if one was to pass stricter background checks then they would still be capable of purchasing a gun and using it for sport, the same can be said for self-defense. There are various ideas for solutions to gun violence and gun regulation. Majority of people in favor of gun regulation argue that stricter federal background checks need to be created and enforced more efficiently. These federal background checks would include a more improved mental health screening aspect.
