The Island Of Beak-Topia

Improved Essays
In the island of Beak-topia, resides a countless number of birds. To search for food, some fly above the trees, like the toucan, while others swim underneath the island, like the penguin. To hang out with their friends, some get up really early, like the rooster, and some wait until others go to bed, like the owl. All the birds on the island are different, but we still call them birds. There are four basic things that all of these types of birds have in common. They all have beaks, wings, feathers, and can lay eggs.
There is one woodpecker on the island named Charlie. Charlie is one of the smaller birds on the island and because of this, he gets bullied far more often than any other bird. One day, a couple of bird bullies shoved Charlie off of a tree branch. He landed right on his beak, which shattered into a hundred pieces. Without a beak, Charlie felt less like a bird. Without his

Machine functionalism describes the relationship between the brain and mind as such, the brain is the input source of the later output mind. Now, this explanation is very general and only describes how one would get from point A to point C. Point B or the events that take place to get from the input to the output are related to the cognitive system mentioned earlier. Point B in machine functionalism is a straight line. This means whatever Point A is, it MUST then result in point C. This is what makes this type of functionalism so machine-like, the theory upholds the view that our mind operates on values which are then computed and brought out through our motor functions. In Beak-topia, Charlie’s beak allows him to have the same input function (eating and pecking) as a beak of another bird on the island. Therefore, the output for both beaks, Charlie, and other bird, are the same. This is why Charlie’s beak can be classified as a real

Many different animals develop different strategic foraging behaviours to survive the winter months. The black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) are a songbird that can be observed throughout North America and remain year round even during the cold winters (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). During the winter the chickadees form an average flock size of about six to eight, but this number can vary (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). In the flock there is a social hierarchy and the dominant individual demonstrates certain behaviours such as vocalizing, bluffs threat, chasing, displacement or fighting to state its dominance (Barkan, 1990, p. 393, Hartzler, 1970, p. 429; Odum, 1942, p. 521). Dominance in a black-capped chickadee is observed when one individual known as a subordinate submits to the dominant individual that is perceived to be more prevailing in…

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is now one of my favorite places in St. Petersburg! This field trip was a nice break from the fast-paced urban lifestyle that I have been living since moving away from home. Our excursion began at the bird-of-prey aviary. There were several types of birds at the aviary: eastern screech owls, turkey vultures, barred owls, great horned owls, and a bald eagle, to name a few. At the aviary, I learned that barred owls are best known for a call that sounds like, "Who cooks for you……

New Take on Tropical Songbirds’ Alternative Lifestyles A breakthrough study published on Friday in the journal Science uses life history theory to explain why tropical songbirds typically raise fewer chicks than temperate songbirds. What’s life history theory? Life history theory seeks to explain the ways in which natural selection works to determine a given organism’s anatomy and behaviors. Life history theory suggests that reproductive tendencies, or “life history strategies,” are part of a complex system of species traits, or “life history characteristics.”…

Functionalism is one of three major social theories that focus on a particular part of a social problem. Functionalists think of society as a machine; every part of the society machine has its own function. When everything is running properly in the machine, then there is equilibrium of society. When it comes to functionalism, sometimes parts of society do not work properly. This is referred to as a dysfunction.…

In his paper, The Nature of Mental States, Hilary Putnam advocates for functionalism, the idea that the mind is defined by what it does, rather than what it is composed of. The mind serves a purpose similar to that of a machine, taking various inputs, performing a function, and producing certain outputs. He contests the arguments of the brain-state theory which claims that mental processes and brain processes are the same. I will claim that Putnam’s argument for functionalism is successful because he does not place limits on the inputs for functions, limit the function of the mind to only humans, and limit the number of functions that can be performed.…
