The Islamic Revolution began in the year of 1979. The Revolution caused many of bad changes in Iran such as, no freedom, closing of bilingual schools, segregation by gender in schools, and women were expected to wear a veil. Persepolis is a graphic novel written by Marjane Satrapi. The novel gives readers an inside on her life as a child during the Islamic Revolution. In Persepolis, Marji is a ten year old and girl that is realizing how difficult life is when your country is going through a corrupt revolution. Marji begins to develop a passion for what she believes in, a stubbornness, her own opinions, and starts making her own decisions whether they are right or wrong.

The punishment could be prison time or they could just fix the problem right then and there such as, cut a person’s hair (Satrapi 112). When Marji started growing up, she started to break the rules by skipping class to go see boys (Starpi 112), and she also started smoking (Strapi 117). Marji was wearing jewelry to school, which was forbidden. After she got her jewelry taken away, she would get into arguments with her principle. One time, Marji went too far and hit her principle, which got Marji kicked out of school (Starpi 143). Her parents decided to send her to Austria to live and go to one of the best French schools in Europe. If she was more soft spoken she could have stayed with her parents, but she was passionate about what she believed in, which is the way people should live life. When Marji was leaving the country, readers got to see how kind and she was “Marji: I invited my girlfriends over to say goodbye. Here. I’m giving you my most precious things, so that you won’t forget me. I never realized how much they loved me. And I understood how important they were to me.” (Satrapi 149). Marji wanted to make sure her friends had nice things so they were as blessed as she was.
The Islamic Revolution caused Marji and many other people to be passionate and stand up for their beliefs even if the punishment could have been severe. Marji was stubborn about her opinions. Marji did all she could do to make a difference during the Islamic Revolution before she left to go to Austria.
