Introduction
Matthew, also called Levi. Jesus Christ gave Matthew the apostle this name----Levi, it means “the gift of God”. This name also represent the transfer between his sinful past and his future (follow Lord Jesus Christ) and he is not just a gift of God,he is the gift others. He proved this later in Bible stories. Levi is the son of Alphaeus and the brother of James the Less. James the Less is also an apostle of Jesus Christ. The first time Matthew appear in the Holy Bible, he is in a tax booth on the main highway in Capernaum. According to Mary, “The site of Capernaum is on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, about one mile east of the Mount of the Beatitudes” (1). Capernaum is the most important place for Jesus activities in Galilee. It was also the living place of James the Less, Peter, John, and Andrew. People live here are most Jews. According to Rotem, “The village prospered in the Roman and Byzantine periods, and its citizens were mainly fishermen, farmers, and people that provided services to the Roman road and caravans, including tax collection” (1). That explains why some of Jesus apostles are fishermen and tax collector.
Before Matthew followed Jesus Christ, he was a tax collector in a tax booth in Capernaum. Like most of the tax collectors, Matthew was typical bad people.
