The Zika Virus Analysis

Every four years somewhere in the world the summer Olympics are held for this reason countries around the world compete to see who has the best athletes. It’s a great opportunity for the hosting country to make so economic gains as well as being able to show the rest of the world their culture. Although the games bring many positives, this year 's games in Rio, Brazil are questionable because of the virus that has become viral and is spreading rapidly around the region. The Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes and unprotected sex, in most cases there isn’t any symptoms, but for a woman who is pregnant the virus is linked to cause microcephaly in the developing baby, which causes a smaller head and mental issues and it rarely causes Guillain-Barre syndrome which is paralysis. The scare with the disease is that an athlete or a tourist could become infected while in Brazil for the games and bring it home and possibly spread it to loved ones. Even when the tourists go home, they have no idea if they are infected by the disease because no reliable detection for the disease is available. …show more content…
Brazil doesn’t want this at all because of how much money they put into the games with building stadiums for the games to be hosted in. Brazil’s economy would really benefit with a high attendance, so Zika scares off some of the attendees who would rather watch from home, than go there.”The Olympics is often touted as an opportunity to showcase a destination before and during the Games...Zika is clearly disrupting the traditional promotional period for Brazil” (Baran 6).
