The Strive For Beauty
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines beauty as, “the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit” (Merriam-Webster). While the Oxford English Dictionary defines the word “beautiful” as “Excelling in the grace of form, charm of coloring, and other qualities, which delight the eye and call forth admiration”(What is beauty and How do we Know It?). However, this definition seems remarkably broad in comparison to how society views what beauty is or what makes an individual beautiful. In ancient Greece, beauty was defined as a sixth sense, in the twentieth century, the idea that in the eye of the those who view was where beauty would surface. (What is Beauty and How Do We Know It?) Whether it be the ideal that women have to be thin, women have to be curvaceous, women should love themselves, or everybody 's body is wonderful. Whether it’s the idea that women shouldn’t have flaws; acne, scarring, freckles, birthmarks, etc on their face and that they should cover it up with makeup, but then again society doesn’t like when a girl wears makeup, ‘it isn’t natural’. Whether it be the woman’s body should be full on top, small in the middle, and thicker on the bottom and the idea of woman getting surgery done to fit those requirements, but then women who do this are fake. Society is constantly wanting one thing from someone and then wanting woman to be another way. Most of the time Society’s ideas of being helpful in the beginning turn into negative outlooks and end up hurting the person they only wanted to change in the beginning. The woman’s body to society is everyone 's, society itself sexualizes women, makes young girls grow up way too fast, makes people starve themselves, and constantly hurts people.
