Remaining abreast of the latest literature surrounding abuse, addiction, and current events is an imperative requirement to being an effective social worker or substance abuse counselor. The plight of Americans that do not have control of their food consumption urges is a direct result of the food industry. Restaurateurs, marketers, and other individuals with careers within this industry prefer that individuals continue to consume their products, refraining from caring that they are falsely marketing items, or that they are the singularity reason as to why currently we American’s are experiencing such a huge surge in weight trends and related disorders. In addition, he was the Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from November 8, 1990 to February 28, 1997. Upon his departure from his tenure at the FDA he was the Dean of the Yale School of Medicine between the years 1997 to 2003. He has one award from the National Academy of Sciences in 2001 that being the Public Welfare Medal. Furthermore Kessler’s writing career includes more than the book The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite. Kessler has written two other books that tackle the pressures of Americans substantial reliance on food and the environment we leave in that sensationalizes sugar, salt, and food. Because of Kessler’s accomplishments and reliability to give information that is correct, displays why his book and the data that was expounded upon within the work of literature was taken seriously. Currently, Americas are experiencing an obesity epidemic that not only concerns adults but children as well. Kessler’s book gives us an in depth scholarly perspective as to why this issue is occurring and the solutions that can be positioned to rectify our obsessions with high fat, sugar, and salt. The problem lies in the food industry and their marketing ploys that significantly represent and administer foods to Americans that are detrimental to our health and highly addictive. Upon entering graduate school I did not know that food could result in addiction. My cognition process of eating disorders surrounded bulimia and anorexia, but now I know there is much more disorders compounded into food addiction. I intend to complete research and follow food addiction expert’s literature because I want to become more familiar with the topic, I eventually want to become an expert and have the knowledge and experience to assist individuals combating food
