As in the story is portrayed Fortunato as the fool for being lured into Montresor’s trap for revenge. Fortunato is dressed in a jester costume of a tight-fitting colorful striped dress, and a conical cap and bells. He is also heavily intoxicated making his behavior and judgment making a fool of himself. The costume amuses Montresor towards the end when he the jingles of the bell, as he dies as a fool. I think Poe dress him in a fool costume to foreshadow Montresor future actions or he thinks He is a fool to be conceited as a man to be so sure of the finer things in life. Fortunato’s surrounding high-class society to think so highly of himself of the knowledge of fine arts, wine, and jewelry makes him a fool. Fortunato feels offended that someone can be better than him at wine tasting so he says, “You have been imposed upon; and as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado” (109).This weakness that makes Fortunato gullible to Montresor’s trap for revenge. Montresor on the hand is dressed in all black with his face covered in a black silk mask with a roquelaire (a knee-length cloak). His costume is very strange for a festive event such as a carnival, which indicates he has his own reason to attend (his revenge). His costume adds due to the mystery of his revenge is really an unknown. He dresses to disguise himself as night which signifies as

Every time I read his stories it excites me on how he uses literary devices. For example the name Fortunato means the fortune one, which is funny since because he was unfortunate to be the target. When it comes to Poe Allegory, and Symbolism are hard to see if whoever is reading doesn’t pay full attention to it. “The Cask of Amontillado” was a tough to figure out the Allegory, and the Symbolism.…

In my opinion, Montresor did a great job at that .Fortunato is gullible, oblivious, and according to Montresor he has a weak point; “He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine” (Poe 1). As a matter of fact, during the time of the crime, Fortunato was intoxicated, and therefore not in the right state of mind. It is arguable that Fortunato, in fact, chose his own fate due to his irresponsible behavior. Fortunato wore motley that night. His foolish costume represents his foolish behavior and the fool he really is for walking into a death trap.…

A secret crime during a time of fun and joy. The story “the Cask of Amontillado” is a dread-filled, vengeful novel about the plotting and murder of Fortunato the “antagonist,” placed in what is presumably Spain during Carnival. Montresor is a rich man with a grievance he wishes to carry out on Fortunato. Which leads Montresor, or more to the point, Poe, to then move the setting to the Montresor family catacombs. A great place to keep the murder concealed and a way to make an already macabre plot of murder that much darker.…

“The Cask of Amontillado” was my favorite out of the three Poe stories we read because of the narrator’s characteristics. To begin, Montresor, the main character of this story, was very cunning in luring his friend, Fortunato, using different methods such as giving him “a flagon of De Grâve” (Poe 2). He gave his former friend alcohol to intoxicate him, and this was disguised carefully by his devious self as a treatment for Fortunato’s cough. The narrator was extremely cautious about the execution of his plan, and this was a quality that appealed to me, but preferably for a positive cause. In addition, this text was not as gory as the others when Montresor worked “vigorously to wall up the entrance of the niche” (Poe 3) and eventually kill Fortunato.…

This allows the reader to really think about why something is happening or why the characters act the way they do. In this story, Fortunato is a symbolic reference and Fortunato means “the fortunate one”. Ironically, throughout the story, Fortunato is being prepped by Montresor in order for him to kill Fortunato. Also the costume that Fortunato wears is another example in the story because it aligns with the metaphor of Fortunato being a jester or fool. Throughout the story, Fortunato is oblivious to Montresor’s true intentions especially during the carnival celebration.…

What does it take to achieve the perfect revenge? It should be surprising, unexpected, and he or she must get away with it unbeknownst to anyone else. Edgar Allan Poe makes sure to emphasize that the person who is scoring revenge must never be exposed to or caught by anyone else. A key ingredient to the narrator's plot in "The Cask of Amontillado" is the setting. It takes place in a creepy, underground catacomb in Italy during carnival season.…

“The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story detailing the revenge of a man that could not endure the insult of a rival (183). The theme of this mid-1800’s horror story is alluded to in the title, a cask of desired Spanish sherry used as a lure. Temptation for a man whose weakness happens to be alcohol. Weaknesses are used repeatedly to goad the plot forward, giving warning to all that anyone can be reached by those they trod upon. It is ironic because according to Behind the Name, Fortunado means fortunate in Italian and this character is the exact opposite of that. Montressor, the main character, ends up killing Fortunado to make him feel the pain that Fortunado made him feel. Throughout the story Poe keeps writing in a way that makes it seem as though Montresor is concerned about Fortunado’s well being. Poe writes, “we will go back; your health is precious. You are rich, respected, admired, beloved; … we will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible” (545).…
