The involvement of money often complicates situations and the cases of great payments for participating in clinical trials are no exception to that. With the expanding practices of clinical trials, bioethicists have pointed out the flaws of using monetary rewards, which I would like to further develop on. For now, I believe that undue inducement can be a great concern especially in a clinical setting. In formal form, undue inducement is an offering of a benefit- one that is so excessive- that tempts individuals to reconsider things that they would not do normally. It compromises their ability reflect on the risks and benefits of the procedure, as they would be clouded by the thoughts of “indulging” in the benefits. In research, concerns of undue inducement are often brought up as the huge payment of money to test newer drugs or undergo risky procedures can be seen as “inappropriate”. Three payment models in particular will be analyzed to see if those exhibit any form of undue inducement. The market model, the first of the three models, centers on issuing payments that are align with the current market wage. In some cases, the market model rewards the subjects with even more money for completion of trials.
