History has taught us that mankind is an extremely curious and ambitious species, constantly inventing. From the moment some caveman bashed a rock on the ground to make the first sharp-edged tool, to the development of electricity and the Internet, several key advancements stand out as particularly revolutionary and some say, even dangerous. Despite the fact that hardly sixteen years in the new millennium have been spent, the 21st Century is already full of great and, some say dangerous, inventions that serve as a reminder that no matter how advanced society might get, human curiosity never fails to seek out new advancements and technologies. One of the greatest innovations of the 21st Century is that of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering, is the modification of certain and/or all characteristics and traits of an organism by manipulating its genetic material. The research on modifying human’s genetic material began soon after realizing that genes not only influences a human’s traits and behavior but that they influence health and disease as well. In the recent past, this technology was used for ‘gene-doping.’ ‘Doping’ was the act of taking performance-enhancing drugs originally meant for treating people with a disease in order to enhance athletic performance, however this was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), created by the International Olympic Committee, in the early 90’s.
