Hugo Movie Analysis

The movie Hugo was a delightful film that came out recently and took place in Paris, France. The movie was a story of loss, desperation, longing, hope, love and healing. It was skillfully done using really young actors as main characters as well as teaching the audience some history about the origins of film. It was a perfect choice to watch and analysis this film after learning about the huge undertaking and effort it takes to make a film. Last week’s readings really helped me appreciate watching this film and thinking about all the decisions that was made to create this entertaining masterpiece.

During the flashbacks the audience sees how well Hugo was kept clean with fresh clothes and brushed hair. Present day the film shows Hugo wearing crumpled dirty cloths, unkempt hair, and wearing clothing that was not appropriate for the winter season. George present day when the film opens shows him looking sad and depressed. During the flash backs you see a younger George happy and full of life loving making film. Hugo’s facial expressions throughout the movie also add the understanding of the film. When his father was a live you can see Hugo smiling and having a glow to his aura. Later when he was living in the train station you can see how lifeless his blue eyes have become. He kept his head down and looked pale and sickly. The style of the film was not to acknowledge a spectator and the characters pretended the camera was not there. It was mentioned how Hugo’s appearance, facial expressions and demeanor all changed once he was on his own. This was all done to help guide the viewer to feel sympathetic for Hugo’s plight as an orphan and become more involved in his …show more content…
All the scenes added something to the film. Either the scene was necessary for the plot to move along or it helped the audience become emotionally invested in the film. In the beginning of the film Hugo follows George home with the hope of getting his book back. If Hugo just waited until George went back to work the next day he would have never met George’s daughter which helped the plot move forward. Also the first scenes in the library were not necessary for the plot but helped the audience feel badly for Hugo. The librarian took note of Hugo’s appearance and penned him off as a
