In 1877, Edward Muybridge successfully photographed a horse in fast motion using a series of 24 cameras. However, these were all a series of still photos that were viewed in a sequence and Edison wanted something better to represent motion. Edison used the principle of a metal cylinder and had a series of tiny sequential photos attached that would give the illusion of motion when the cylinder spins.
