Jodi Arias Interview Essay

While watching the interview of Jodi Arias, we discovered multiple signs, verbal and non-verbal, that we used to determine whether or not Arias is telling the truth or lying. To begin the interview Arias is asked various general information questions regarding how she met Travis Alexander and the development of their relationship together. We used this to set up a baseline of how she answered questions. Throughout this process we highlighted the key verbal and non-verbal signs to see how her responses changed from the beginning to the end of the interview. These are our findings.

He began fidgeting in his chair, wiping his palms on the fabric of his shorts and became hunched over in his chair. There was little eye contact; instead he stared at the floor while thinking of his answers. His time in between questions gradually became longer and was prone to repeating himself. He kept stating that he believed the boy had a gun, trying to solidify his side of the story. Dunn made the mistake of telling the detectives that the boy he had shot made gestures to exit the vehicle. The detectives ask Dunn why he had never mentioned this and noted that all witness’ never saw the boy exit the vehicle or make a move to open the door. This is where Dunn was clearly lying about his story. He began to state that he was unable to recall what happened during this time. Dunn then forgot about what he had seen in relation to a weapon due to the detectives stating that they had found nothing in or around the vehicle. From this point on Dunn continued to stare at the floor, remain hunched over, and repeat his story to the detectives.
Both Arias and Dunn did specific things to show that led us to believe that they were telling the truth. There were also key factors that clearly indicated when they were lying resulting in the incrimination of both individuals. This goes to show that even though a person says one story, their body can be telling a completely different
