In order to be a certified sexual assault nurse examiner, a registered nurse must complete 40 hours of certification training. In addition to the training, shadowing experienced sexual assault examiner, is also recommended in order to build skills. Training also teaches how to interview victims in order to record an accurate statement. The physical examination focuses on areas where the person was assaulted. The nurse has to take photographs and use swabs to collect DNA evidence of semen, saliva or sweat. Blood or oral swabs are also taken to provide a baseline DNA of the victim. The nurse is also responsible for collecting evidence such as clothing. Once all the forensic evidence is collected the nurse is responsible for packaging it into a sealed sexual assault kit to preserve evidence for law enforcement purposes.
Cindy mentioned that this 40 hours of training is only required for certification but is not required by

She said it may be partially due to a terrible experience she had with a training nurse or because it is protection for her own mental health. However if she ever did feel traumatized, the hospital provides counseling services and frequently encourages staff to connect with other staff to make sure they have a community support system. Cindy did speak of one time where a non-verbal disabled male had been sexually assaulted by a trusted caregiver. She was filled with sorrow for the victim and a lot of anger toward the caregiver. She said this case was especially hard because she had to have the victim reenact the event through dolls so that they could document what had happened. Going through that process was more emotionally impactful then what she had experienced

I learned though doctors may be the wants that have more education experience, it is nurses that really get to know patients and treat them. I found learning this was interesting because I got to find a field upon which I can work with patients. The other interesting stuff about being a Nurse Practitioner which was interesting is the different types of places one can work.…

My field supervisor was out sick today so I get to experience a new area of the hospital today, the ICU. It was so interesting to see how differently the ICU social worker, Lynne, works in comparison to Jamie. There is a lot less patient interaction since the ICU patients are in much worse conditions and a majority of them were not even conscious. Lynne’s case load seems much more complicated as she works with families and other agencies.…

Medicine has always been something I could see myself enjoying. I was initially inspired by my older sister who aspired to be a regristered nurse, and then I decided that medicine was a path I wanted to go down as well. However, when I came to college I wasn’t doing great in my natural science classes so I got decided to to into the Aging Studies field where academically I did so much better. This took me off my track to go to medical school and become a doctor but I was determined to get back on track.…

In the scope and standards of practice, a designated time frame should be implemented. The philosophy that surrounds the changes in protocol is one of preserving the patient’s dignity. Waiting more than one hour in an exam room after a rape or sexual assault can affect the dignity of a patient. Forensic nurses are held to legal accountability as a forensic nurse “often collects evidence, provides medical testimony in court, and consults with legal authorities” (IAFN, n.d, para 4). Providing dignity and respect to each patient is at the core of forensic nursing.…

I also provided negatives and positive outcome of this type of field of work.
