The book is about Silvia Broome who is an interpreter at the United Nations in New York City. She is from an African Country called Matobo.
The story starts with a scene in Matobo, where two men were killed by two little boys using military weapons. The group had three men and the third was inside their car when the murders happened. This “third” person survived.
Sometime after, Silvia Broome was leaving the United Nations when she realized that her handbag was inside the interpreter’s booth. So, she returned to the booth and realized that the interpreter’s audio system was on. Apparently, nobody was inside the conference room, but out of curiosity, she put the headset on her head. She could hear two people whispering something like “kill the teacher”, but at that time, she couldn’t understand the real meaning. Zuwanie, the president of Matobo, arrived in New York City to speak at the United Nations, in an attempt to avoid the indictment. As Zuwanie started to speak, a Matobo’s ambassador aimed a rifle at him from an interpreter’s booth. When he was about to fire, agent secrets arrived and shooted him twice. Security personnel pushed Zuwanie into the safe room for his protection. Keller discovered that the rifle meant to kill Zuwanie wouldn’t work. It was an elaborate plan by Zuwanie to make it look as though someone wanted to kill
