The internship is a good way to practice teaching in a classroom setting. It can be challenging because of the requirements needed to comply and complete the program aside from managing a classroom. The knowledge I’ve gained from my seven years experience working as a Special Education Assistant has given me many insights on how to handle a class. Additionally, my training as a Behavior Therapist helps me manage the behavior issues of my students with disabilities.
Domain A: Making Subject Matter Comprehensible to Students

We do activities that are related to our subject and incorporate technology like interactive videos. I make sure to discuss the background knowledge before introducing a new topic. I do "cloze reading" and annotations by guiding my students to circle unfamiliar words and underline main ideas. I provide visual aids for vocabulary words and real life examples to promote understanding of the lesson. Teaching skills such as grooming check, checking daily schedules and setting goals are some of the skills that I incorporate into my lesson plans on a daily basis. Demonstrating proper behavior and setting classroom expectations are reinforced on a daily basis to promote positive behavior and camaraderie among students.
With this in mind, I need to work on teaching English Language Learners from diverse background and make sure they can relate to our lesson. I have to incorporate meaningful skills to my students so they can perform the activities in the classroom and school settings. By June 2016, I will ask myself “Why am I teaching this lesson.” In this way, I can engage my students in a discussion and relate how my teaching is supporting my

If ever a student displays inappropriate behavior, I redirect the student to the desired behavior and try to manage the behavior I want with positive reinforcement. I set a reward system where my students earn a ticket whenever they finish their work and follow directions. Then I give a prize at the end of the day and acknowledge the good behavior.
In this case, I need to work on managing and responding to attention seeking behavior in a legal and ethical manner. I feel that I need to improve on transitioning students from activities. Also, I need to think of other strategies that will work in positive behavior support with students with inappropriate conduct. Without a doubt, I need to set a self-monitoring chart for a couple of my students to manage the attention seeking behavior with a timer and reward the student for demonstrating good behavior.

    An immediate intervention that could be used to mitigate Joey’s disruptive behavior is to establish a reward system. Joey’s disruptive behavior is motivated by a need for adult attention that manifests in the form of talking out of turn, loudly and off topic. The antecedents include: interrupting when the teacher gives attention to his classmates, talking louder if he feels he is being ignored, and off topic outbursts when he is disengaged or bored.
