Sarah, your average high school student, received a new cell phone for her birthday. This was not just any phone; it was a “smart” phone. The phone was capable of all sorts of nifty tricks. There were hundreds of apps available to Sarah, from exciting games to new social media networks. Suddenly, Sarah’s phone beeped. It was her boyfriend Jack. “Did you download that app I told you about?” the message read. Sarah had forgotten. She went to her phones online store and searched for the app. “Chat snap” he called it. Unfortunately, the app was five dollars. There was only one way to get the app: Sarah went to her mother’s purse and “borrowed” her mother’s credit card. These heinous acts of privacy violation are the result of mobile devices. In today’s modern world, almost everyone has a cell phone or other mobile device. A majority of people possess “smart” phones. Smart phones are miniature computers, connecting individuals from all over the globe. A price comes with those connections. Phones are the main sights for private words, pictures, and personal information to become public. There are real-life Sarah’s in the world. Recently, the popular phone app know as “SnapChat”, has been linked to the development of child pornography. According to CTV News a group of ten high school students from Laval, Montreal where arrested for possession and distribution of child pornography. Children are finding themselves suspects in court cases or even convicted for the production and of child pornography. Their convictions stay with them for years, making it extremely difficult for the child to earn scholarships, obtain jobs, or become successful in the world. One common aspect links the court cases. Going back to Sarah, she shared something in confidence with her partner, but through a string of messages, the entire student body had learned her “secret”. Events like this occur almost every day, with consequences varying in severity. Clearly, those that need the most protection of privacy are children and young adults.
Even though parents warn their children about sharing information over mobile devices, too many members of the younger generation fall victim to violations of privacy. Programs must be formed to educate the youth of society on the hazards of sharing private information through phones and other mobile devices. Adolescents must understand that lives are ruined when personal information falls into the wrong hands. Only then will the number of people who have their privacy turned into public knowledge, decrease. The younger generation must be saved from the dangers of this increasingly digital
