Cuba has horrendous internet speed thanks to the Cuban government of the 1990’s. Fidel Castro who was the communist ruler from 1959 - 2008 and let his younger brother Raúl Castro control Cuba. Fidel Castro hid his people from the internet and restricted the use of it in 1992. Information from the internet could expose Cuba in the communist fairs. This was considered a military tactic according to Fidel Castro. In 2006 rules against the internet were less restrictive, but later on allowed some freedom to the people of Cuba. The internet in Cuba is controlled by a government owned organization named ETSECA. Government owned organization ETSECA introduced internet access to the island and with that wifi hotspots were scattered all over the island.

A big underground system where you can obtain content the we Americans take for granted. “They do this by a digital transport of flash drives throughout the island “either delivered to their home or transferred at a pickup station, usually in the back of a cell phone repair shop, a natural cover for this type of operation”. This is called “El Paquete Semanal” or the Weekly Package and cost around $1 to $3 for American movies, music, and shows. All controlled by a 26 year old named Dany. For this to happen Dany the 26 year old behind the operation relies on data traffickers to deliver the files, but says he doesn’t know how obtained the content. Between May 29 and June 10 of 2016 OONI researchers monitored multiple access points in Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Santa Clara and found a discovery. What they found in their research were 41 different websites blocked within Cuba, including Cuban Free Press Project and Freedom House which are both news outlets that talk about the Cuban government without hiding anything in their articles. OONI reported many other websites were blocked by the Cuban Castro regime. They’ve mostly restrict news media websites and political criticism. Also most media applications such as Skype is censored. Applications like Facebook or Whatsapp are alternatives for the people to communicate with family. According to OONI’s report the Cuban government is not the only one cencorshng Cubans from outside media, news, and anything bad about Cuba. Google plays a part in censoring the people of Cubans.
