Essay on The Internet Has Changed Our Society

The internet has vastly changed our society, from the way we are able to access information to what we do with our free time. Yet there’s one aspect of internet culture that is rarely talked about: pornography. I know that a person reading this essay might wonder what would compel an eighteen year-old girl to talk about such a taboo subject in her college English class. And frankly, the answer is much less interesting than one might think. The truth is, I was scrolling through the documentaries offered on Netflix when I saw one called “After Porn Ends.” That inspired me to write about how porn relates to the culture industry. However, I greatly overestimated the amount of print information I would be able to find in Joplin. After going to the school library and leaving without even one physical book, I went to the Joplin Public Library to find what I needed. After looking through books with titles like “Sexpectations” and “Out of the Blue: Confessions of an Unlikely Porn Star,” I realized that libraries do not carry much of what would be helpful to me. Luckily, with a little help from Seth at the reference desk (who, thankfully, never asked why I needed books about the porn industry), I found at least two physical books that could add value to my research. Combine that with an e-book found in Missouri Southern’s databases, a documentary, and a survey I conducted, I feel like I’m well on my way to learning something about a subject people rarely discuss.
