In addition, students without the ability to access the internet in order to grow and learn are left at a disadvantage when entering the world which is why schools need to implement computer technology as a major component in the modern schooling system. In regards to student literacy rates, they can be grown and nurtured by teaching them the skills required in order to become successful in modern times. Gibson said “ When my critical media literacy can be your illiteracy, the concept has become emptied of definite meaning. While literacy is still central to most nothing of education. It is increasingly unclear what we mean by it”.(Gibson, M.). This shows how student literacy need to grow in order to present them with the greatest opportunity for success in the modern workforce. In addition, students have become increasingly reliant on using internet sources at the school with 20% reporting never or hardly using the internet at home (Johnson, G. M.). Children have become influenced by the internet in a negative way as they begin to imitate inappropriate behavior, alter their speech in order to fit into the world, and alter their writing, allowing the poor grammar in the world around them to seep into their speech (Thurlow, C.). The internet is destroying modern communication as students are growing toward technology and are prone to refrain conversation as it pertains to how they communicate with others. The change of modes of modern communication is now anti social and deadened because of the use of the internet as children have been enveloped in the internet causing a lessening in society as people begin to refrain from conversation (Thurlow, C.). Ellen C. Carillo’s “Reading & Writing are Not Connected” challenges and disproves the fallacy claimed in her title. Carillo, a professor of English, speaks from her experience as an educator to articulate the importance of a comprehensive reading-writing education. Drawing from the historical and modern scapegoats for student illiteracy, Carillo debunks these theories and concludes that reading and writing are best learned when taught in conjunction. This point is effectively communicated through the numerous examples of the “real world” implications of poor reading/writing skills, like an inability to analyze and interpret their surroundings. The idea that a lack of these abilities connects with television consumption because much like reading,…

Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience on how the decline in our American arts, specifically literacy, has caused many negative impacts to individuals that don't read regularly. Dana Gioia's paper has informed his audience of young adults, over the importance of literature, and how it helps in social aspects, but most importantly being “advanced” in literature is very “significant in the business world”. A major claim that Dana Gioia mentions in his article, is that “38 percent of employers complained that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension”. This only supports his view on how our society is quickly losing an “advanced literacy skill”, that could help anyone in any “educational, cultural and economic factors”.…

Carr knows how powerful the internet can be, but he is afraid that the internet is affecting our reading and thinking capabilities. Carr and many others have noticed the drastic change in our abilities to read and process information. Many authors had different perspectives on Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, some disagreed and some supported his idea. He argues that we are unable to read for long periods of time consistently mainly because the internet has made us accustomed to shorter readings. Carr does not deny that the internet technology is taking over but he knows that it is taking a toll in our everyday lives.…

According to Tamar Lewin in the article “teenagers internet socializing is not a bad thing” “Good news for worried parents: All those hours their teenagers spend socializing on the internet are not a bad thing, according to a new study by the MacArthur foundation.” when we socialize on the internet, most of the time we are either talking to friends or family, or getting to know other people. Talking to friends and family is a good thing, it brings confidence and joy in life, and getting to know new people is also good because, the more support in life the better. “It my look as though kids are wasting a lot of time hanging out with new media but their participation is giving them the technological skills and literacy they need to succeed in the contemporary world.” we need all the skills we can get to succeed in life.…

The article I have chosen to write about is, Brent Staples, “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace.” Because kids spend most of their time on the web, Staples argues that “online communities isolate adolescents and hinder their social development” (Staples 241). Although I find this to be true, I also find it to be wrong. Even with the internet's revolutionary functions that help the world, the internet is hurting adolescents who will one day run the world. Brent Staples starts his essay by talking about how he had to meet his girlfriend’s father back when he was in the 10th grade.…

I was surprised to read how the term literacy has changed over time and all of the meaning that it now holds. “Literacy has morphed to characterize someone’s level of knowledge or competence in a particular area or subject,” according to Vacca (2014, p. 12). Reading and writing were the first concepts that would come to my mind when thinking of the word literacy, therefore, I was shocked to read how “complex and multidimensional the concept of literacy”(Vacca, 2014, p. 12) has become. Computer literacy, digital literacy, information literacy, media literacy, and health literacy are just a few examples of this concept. As society’s ability to communicate has evolved, so has the concept of literacy.…

It has become common today to dismiss the idea that the internet is diminishing our train of thought. In discussions of the internet, one controversial issue has been about how the internet affects how we learn, think and even how we act. On the one hand, critics like Kevin Kelly would agree that it simply gives us information faster without the delay of reading. On the other hand, Nicholas Carr, Marshall McLuhan, and Stanley Kubrick would contend that it is making us simple minded. Although I agree that the internet is useful up to a point, I can 't accept the overwhelming assumption that it is making us stupid.…

Since the discovery of the Internet it has become increasingly easy to search for information on topics students are unaware of. Kristen Purcell, a writer for Pew Research Center, wrote an article “How Teens do Research in the Digital World,” claiming “Students access a greater depth and breadth of information on topics that interest them; and many become more self-reliant researchers (Purcell).” Computers have been deemed as useful devices for numerous college students. This cyber library that has been created not only allows students to finish their assignments in a timely fashion, it also shows that they are more engaged when doing their research because of all of the web sources literally “handed” to them. Purcell notes that “Fully 86% of college students use the Internet to look up information for their research...and the students say the Internet is essential to their academic lives (Purcell).”…
