Since the pollution of ocean water caused by accident or leakage of oil containing tanker was causing the big issue, the IMO started working towards measures for minimizing the tanker accidents and their negative impacts on ocean water. They also worked for environmental damages caused by routine operations of the ships which consisted of cleaning oil cargo tanks and the disposal of engine room wastes. The best measures to control accidental and operational oil pollution in addition to pollution created by chemicals, packaged goods and sewage garbage were adopted in the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973. This regulation mandates general requirements for issuing standards on various categories such as packing, marking, labeling, documentation, stowage, quantity limitations, exceptions and notifications.
4. Prevention of pollution caused by sewage from ships.
This annex forbids the discharge of sewage into sea unless the ship is equipped with fully functional sewage treatment plant and discharges only non-infected sewage that too at least 3 nautical miles far from land. Moreover, infected sewage is required to discharge at least 12 nautical miles from the land.
5. Prevention of pollution caused by garbage from the ship.
This completely bans the parties to discharge any plastic or material made from plastic into the sea.
6. Prevention of air pollution from
