Global Business And Society Class Analysis

Improved Essays
So far I have taken the Global Business and Society class and this one and I feel like they both complement each other and there are, in fact, topics that are expanded in the International Business and Cross-Cultural Communications course. I am glad that I took this class because it made me understand what I was going through when I was abroad for the first time. The material covered has given me the necessary tools to use for further encounters with people from different cultures.
One of the very first topics that I could relate to was cultural shock and its four stages. When going over every one of those I had flashbacks of my year overseas. I had lived my entire life in a small town where not much happened. Sure, there where foreign students

I went to France as an exchange student with only a few French sentences in my vocabulary. I thought that it was going to be easy, but at the time I arrived and my host family started talking I felt overwhelmed. They were talking to me in French and I freaked out, luckily there was an Argentinian girl who translated everything. Language was definitely the first barrier that I had to overcome because I was in that environment and I knew that I needed to be able to communicate. Although the host father knew some English, he was at work most of the time. Therefore, I stayed alone with his wife, who had no idea how to communicate with me so most of the times we had to communicate through mimics. It was frustrating, but it did not matter because I was in this magnificent place. I was living next to the Mont Blank and the landscape was amazing. The view from my room is something that I will never forget as well as the international friends I made. This phase lasted a month until the host mother told me that I needed to integrate to their …show more content…
My next experience abroad was coming to Lindenwood University. This time I was more prepared to face this experience or that is what I thought. Honestly the idea that I had of how college life is was taken from the many movies that are out there. That was all my research and I regret that I did not do a deeper investigation of the college life. However, this time the transition was not as hard as the first one. I think that the main reason was because this time I was fluent in the “official” language. This time there were also a bigger foreign community on campus who I could talk to. One of the things that shock me about the American culture was how punctual people is. I come from a South American country and many of the Latin countries are known for not being punctual. Now that I think about it is sad that everyone else has that notion of us, but it is true, for us time is relative. This was one of the things that I had to adapt to as well as to fast

The transition was hard for me because the education system was entirely different. I was ahead in math and science but I was behind in reading and writing, and didn’t help that I was the only black child in class. For a few years I would always struggle with reading and writing, and I would dread reading in front of my classmates because I couldn’t say any of the difficult vocabulary and when it came to state exams like the WASL, there are no words that I could describe how I felt. I was in tears everything I would get a failing score on either section.…

After touring Georgia College, I became excited for the future ahead of me. I can visualize myself draped in a dark robe, standing on a stage to receive my diploma, thinking nostalgically of the memories I hold with GCSU. I think of the clubs I involved myself in such as environmental initiatives and community service clubs. I notice my peers who helped me to succeed, regardless of how overwhelmed I sometimes felt, who encouraged me and reminded me of my strengths. I reflect on the semester I spent abroad to embrace the Spanish culture and language.…

A memorable literary work that I’ve read this year was Li-Young Lee’s poem “Persimmons”. I had an interesting experience reading this poem because I got to see this situation unfold through someone else’s point of view; never have I read a literary work that I could deeply relate to as much as I did in this poem and to the author. Li had to learn a new language and change in order to understand it, he had the conflict is the language barrier that Lee encounters in his life and the theme of assimilation in a new social environment. The single major conflict in the poem was the language barrier between Lee and other people. From personal experience I know it’s hard to adjust in a new social environment, especially when there is a vast difference in something as important as language.…

An understanding of Asian culture can positively impact my 21st-century life. For example, being an African American girl in the United States of America I believe it is important to be sympathetic and understanding of other people’s culture and where they came from. Especially since this country is sometimes referred to as a melting pot I’m going to meet different people than myself every day and that includes Asian Americans. For example, I used to work at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and a lot of the college program kids were from Asian countries like Hong Kong and China.…

There are two big lessons I picked up from this trip, one is to trust my instincts, which was drilled into my mind by our professor, he told us to “ Hold tight to your passions, Keep your dream because without it there are no dreams in this world!” These words struck a cord with me, prompting me to take pride in my dreams and work hard to make sure it comes true. College became my platform to achieve my dream.…
