The Interlopers is a story of revenge, feuds, and resolution and is told in a very different way than The Story of an Hour. While the former focuses more on outward conflict and external world, the latter shows you the inward thoughts and world of Mrs. Mallard, the main character. They both evoke separate feelings in you. These two are no exception. Mrs. Mallard is the main character, obviously a female. Her husband ends up being very important to the plot, but he doesn’t show up until the end, so he would not be counted as a main character. Compare the main character to the two from The Interlopers: Georg Znaeym and Ulrich von Gradwitz, two men. Kate Chopin and Saki made unalike choices in characters when it comes to gender, amount, and personalities. The personalities of those characters are reflected in the way their stories are told, which, as we have already discussed, are very dissimilar.
However, one of the two things that tie these two stories together: the message of freedom lurking between the words. In The Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard finds out that she is free. “‘Free! Body and soul free!’ she kept whispering”, (Chopin 1). She is free of her husband, and is determined to live for herself. Like the rest of her story, it follows a more introspective tone.
In The Interlopers, it follows its story’s pattern in being focused on outward conflict. Various small clues throughout the story prove that they are desirous of gaining their freedom, as they are trapped out in the woods at night surrounded by predators – an angle that comes more into play the farther along you
