War is a large-scale confrontation between two or more sides that involves deliberate use of arms and force in order to attain or protect some assets or values. These can be territory, ideology or resources, sovereignty, etc. Confronting groups or states generally have some delineated territory that can be reshaped after the war. Wars usually ended when one of leading groups of opponent either eliminated or surrendered.
In international relations, the most necessary concerns are survival and security as well as the problem of conflicts. Indeed, wars have always been a part of human history. Almost 4 billion people have died during the more than 15000 violent conflict throughout the history.

International system level: wars occurred as a result of prevalent global theories such as power transitions theory or theory of long cycles as well as anarchic system.
Warfare types
There are 4 main types of warfare:
Interstate warfare: the violent conflict between 2 or more actor. Most of recent researches were based on the analyzing of such conflicts because of their prevalence and, hence, huge detriment.
Intrastate warfare: the violent conflict between different parties inside the state, sometimes with external influence. The number of such conflicts have declined, but not so sharply in compare with that of interstate.
Total warfare: the violent conflict with great powers in roles of actors. We have only few examples in history and there is low-probability of rise of this type of warfare in the future.
Limited warfare: the main purpose is rather achieve specific aims than to gain new territory. The pertinent example is Gulf war. Civil wars belong to this type of warfare. It is necessary to mention that almost 4 out of 5 of all conflict after the WWII were limited
