Reflective Essay: A Classical Music Concert

Improved Essays
When thinking of a Classical music concert, the first thing that comes to mind is orchestra. That was not the case on the concert that I attended to. I was able to attend a small performance by a single musician from Juilliard 's school of performing arts. The musician performed works from notable composers such as: Robert Schumann, Leos Janacek and J.S Bach. The instrument of choice by the musician was a viola. The location was very discrete. I have been in school for over 6 months and I was not aware of that place existing. The small venue made the experience pleasant and enjoyable. I sat two tables away from the musician. This allowed me to listen to the musician play from a fair distant, without being overwhelmed by the loudness of the …show more content…
Firstly, the incorporation of minor chords that Bach was originally known for. When Bach began to play and write, it was for the purpose of the church. Since his pieces were for the church, they had a more ominous sound to them. Secondly, the musician was able to create a spacious exposition with the strings. The musician had clear skill when it came to this. At a point during the piece, the musician made it sound as if there were two instruments playing at once. One major difference from studying Bach in class and attending to a live performance would be the use of modes. Throughout the class, as we studied Bach, we went in depth to his use of major mode. It was to my surprised -- to have to sit and listen to music in a minor mode. In my personal taste, to listen to a single instrument would be best in major mode. If one is to listen to a piece in minor mode, but it were to have a complete assemble, then the musicians could play with the music to give it a lively sound. In contradiction, the single musician created a very minor mode to the point that it sounded as if it was dissonant or as if the musician does not know how to play the music. Furthermore, the musician used cadenza. Towards the end of the Bach piece, she kept the crown hanging. As I looked around, I could see the confusion in people 's faces. The musician kept a minor tangent playing over and over. Eventually it it ended and the people around me, more specifically my friends, were caught unsuspectingly as the musician bounced to a major mode randomly. Classical music is not for everyone. I personally enjoy listening to it when played in major mode. Moreover, it is an experience for introduction to music. There is a great deal of appreciation to it once one begins to listen to it. It goes to show that this type of music specifically can be considered are, it is truly

The first real jazz concert that I saw was a Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola. Now this may not be one of the most ideal spots to listen to jazz but it’s still an experience I will never forget. After some research I found that Josh Bruneau is a fairly new jazz musician.…

The Fall Concert took place at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School on October 13, 2016 for the grand reopening of the auditorium that was renovated during the summer. Concert Choir, Liturgical Choir, Concert Band, Eagle Pride, Phoenix, and Vega performed on this brand new stage to celebrate this wonderful event and it would become one of the most important events in the history of CJ. Since I am a member of the Concert Choir, I was really lucky to participate in the Fall Concert and saw that first glance of the new auditorium. It is really beautiful and I believe that it really represents CJ as a whole in the Dayton area and all those who support CJ. Walking into the auditorium, I immediately noticed that the atmosphere of the concert was completely different from that of the classical concert I attended weeks earlier. To begin with, it seemed like there was much more of an audience. Everyone seemed excited for the concert to start. As for myself, I was also excited because, on the very front of the program, it said that there was a guest artist that was going to perform with the ensemble. The performers wore more of a business casual look, some were a little more dressed up than others, but overall they looked very well dressed.…

For the first half of the concert I kept thinking the piece was over and was wondering why the conductor wasn’t stepping away and why no one was clapping. Considered one of his most famous pieces, Bach 's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" speaks a lot, both technically as well as contextually. Initially, my reaction for the piece was positive, with the notion that it would be used to accompany theatric performance of some sort. I noticed the song was composed in a way to have both slow and fast parts, as well as being complex yet easy to follow. Upon looking into Bach 's religious beliefs and lifestyle, in addition to the time period this was composed in, my view on the song changed. The emotional reaction after learning about its history was a lot more powerful, after knowing that this piece was crafted for church.…
