Hollywood typically needs a protagonist and an antagonist in order to successfully prove that the story is true, and to create a meaningful story. As a result, two stereotypical Hollywood characters, the villain and love interest were added often to lift characters, events and triumphs. Firstly, Malina Birch was added as villain when Bethany re-enters the surfing competition, telling her not to go easy on her as she rejects a five-minute head start offered by the judges. Secondly, Taoki, the love interest of the main protagonist, to create hope that Bethany could also live happily ever after. Nevertheless, Bethany Hamilton explained that, “even if there is some fiction in there, my family and I approved of it and we worked with the writers and directors to come up with something that moves the story as long as it doesn’t water things down.” Overall, the addition of the fictional characters did not jeopardise Bethany’s real life story as a character who is driven to pursue her goal as the true …show more content…
For instance, Bethany grew up near the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii, and started surfing at the age of four and competing at the age of eight. Also, Bethany has won the Hawaii Ezekiel Surf Into Summer Event, with her friend Alana placed third. As depicted in the film, the Rip Curl then offered a sponsorship for both girls, which they joyfully accepted. Alana and Bethany also snuck off the night before Halloween with some friends to go night surfing at Tunnels Beach. Although Bethany’s biography reveals there weren’t any fireworks, the girls were the last two to return back to shore. Most importantly, ‘Soul Surfer’ accurately portrayed Bethany playing with her left arm in the ocean when a tiger shark appeared out of nowhere and sunk its teeth into Bethany, biting her arm off near the shoulder. Similarly, Byron did break the car window to access a mobile phone and called 911, while Holt used his surfboard as a stretcher to get Bethany out of the water. Holt also used his rashie and ankle strap to slow down the bleeding, while Alana threw up on the beach in shock. The movie also truthfully depicts Bethany’s father’s reaction, when the doctor broke the news that Bethany was attacked by the shark, while he was prepared for knee

Bethany Hamilton, a champion Hawaiian surfer, was bitten by a shark in 2003 that took her arm off, jeopardizing anything she had planned for the future. Hamilton had never been someone who gave up, so she pushed through and and two years later, she won first place in the Explorer Women’s Division of the NSSA National Championship. Hamilton reacted to her struggles in an outstanding way, much like the characters in the novels The Scarlet Letter and The Other Wes Moore. Reaction to Mistake is common theme in both, The Other Wes Moore and The Scarlet Letter, due to how they display the crafts of Imagery and Stream of Consciousness. The Abyss (1910), is a movie ahead of its time. Not only due to the erotic dance scene resembling a modern striptease, but also its plot form, which is very similar to a modern Romantic-drama: Two men fighting over one woman—one a gentleman and the other an abusive cheater. The women ends up wanting the bad boy, because although the gentleman treats her better, he’s not the one she really loves. This is one of the first movies I’ve seen from this time with such a complex story within the plot.…

Lone Survivor: Speech by Brooke Macrini Brooke Macrini’s speech about Peter Berg’s 2013 film, “Lone Survivor,” gave us a picture of just how excited she was about the film, but also why we should watch it. Some of the key aspects we will be looking at in an evaluation of her delivery are her statements about the film, her actual delivery of the speech, some of the things she did right, and some of the things she could have done better. Brooke’s speech was mainly centered on a couple of key point’s; the camaraderie and brotherhood that is central to the story, the riveting action throughout the entire film, and her own reactions and emotions while watching the film. She focused on the parts of the film that were relatable to her and was keenly able to zero in on the film’s greater theme of brotherhood and the importance that plays not only in the film, but…

To further discuss operant conditioning, I will be writing about punishment seen throughout the movie Blackfish in this section of the paper. Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, a killer whale used for entertainment and the use of operant conditioning to obey orders. Tilikum was first placed in a pool with an already trained whale to learn and perform tricks. Because Tilikum failed to perform, all whales were held from food and led to teeth rakes on Tilikum. This is an example of negative punishment, with food being the removed consequence which leads to a decrease of disobedience from the whale.…

Filmed over 3 years and released in 2007, the documentary follows Maroubra’s ‘bra boys’ surf gang, primarily focused on the Abberton brothers; Jai, Koby and Sunny. The audience is positioned into accepting the bra boys as a fringe-group that have been victims of social injustice, who have turned to the ocean and their brotherhood as protection from the adversity surrounding them. Through the effective utilisation of various film techniques, and objective documentary characteristics, the audience is provoked into believing the reality presented by Abberton and De Souza; that social adversity can be overcome.…
