Inside Out And Back Again Essay

The book ''Inside out and Back Again'' by Thanhha Lai, relates to the universal experience of fleeing and finding a home. Many refugees, including the character Ha from the book ''Inside Out and Back Again'', go through a lot of sadness and worries because of war, or any reason for fleeing. ''Inside Out'' which is the first half of the title, means a turn of events in someone's life, or something bad is awaiting.''Back Again'' the second half of the title, shows how someone or in Ha's case, her family can get their lives partially normal, or how it was before. It is never easy for a refugee to flee, let alone find a new home, and get their life on track, we see this, especially through Ha's experience. Life as a refugee is challenging, and it can change your life in a negative way, as it did to Ha. For example, in the book it says ''In the distance war bombs explode like thunder, slashes lighten they sky, gunfire falls like rain...Not that far away at all''.(Lai 48). In the book, it says ''No one has offered to share what I smell...I lean toward the family on the next mat, mother firmly shakes her head, she looks so sad and she pats my hand." This shows how just to flee Ha has to eat in small portions, and even want others peoples food because she doesn't have. This compares to the text in the article ''Children of war'' where it says ''Elma: Everything completely changed. One minute we had everything, then we had nothing''. This quote compares to the idea that had had food at home at least enough to sustain her and when fleeing she doesn't, basically saying one minute she had everything, and the other she had nothing. Ha's story shows the refugee experience and how when fleeing people must make hard decisions and live in fear. This explains the first part of the title "Inside

During the war in Sierra Leone, both Ishmael Beah and Mariatu Kamara experienced the war personally, giving first-hand accounts of all the incidents, however, Beah emphasized more on how the war affected the society and the entire country, while Kamara only described how the war had an effect on her life rather than the society as a whole. In A Long Way Gone, Beah emphasizes the chaos and destruction that the war brought upon not just his village but the entire society, in people's behaviours and their trust upon each other. “Things changed rapidly in a matter of seconds and no one had any control over anything. We had yet to learn these things and implement survival tactics, which was what it came down to” (Beah 29).…
