I sunk my hands deep into the pockets of my hoodie as I walked through the cool summer night at a quick pace. My favourite music was blasting through my earphones as I listened to it with only my left ear; my other earphone was dangling down my chest. The snap of a branch echoed through the silence of the night and I turned around, but there was nothing out of the ordinary. Oh well, you could never be careful enough at this time. I continued my path, making sure to check my surroundings every once in a while. Again, never too safe. As I entered the park, I tried to avoid the light of the streetlamps as much as possible, staying out of sight of those creeps always hanging around there. Nonetheless, I still heard whistling and with an eye roll

“On Being Sane in Insane Places” by D.L. Rosenhan focuses on an experiment testing if sanity can be distinguished from insanity, how the labels of diagnoses stick, and depersonalization within the mental institutes. The experiment and the purpose of the experiment is set up in the first few paragraphs. The purpose of the experiment is to find if the sane are detectable within mental institutions. To test this they had eight pseudopatients get admitted into twelve different mental hospitals across the nation. With each patient only the names of them and their occupations were changed to keep the diagnosis from embarrassing them later in life (Rosenhan 251).…

Psychologist David Rosenhan came up with a study that proved the common misdiagnoses of mental illness. The study is called “Being Sane in Insane Places” and recorded the experiences of eight normal, sane people, who were admitted to psychiatric hospitals by saying that they were hearing voices in their heads like "thud, or dull". After they were admitted into the psychiatric hospital or "loony bin", they were instructed to act completely normal and to no longer report hearing voices or show any abnormal symptoms. What occurred after they entered the hospital was shocking and very interesting. Every single person in the study was in fact admitted into the psychiatric hospital.…

Use of portraiture in redefining ostracized people In discussing nineteenth century portraiture it is relevant to discuss the different styles of Anne-Louis Girodet and Théodore Géricault in their Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Belley and Portrait of an Insane Man respectively. Both of these artists express a distinct difference in stylistic technique and composition that create an interesting contrast when juxtaposed. There is a similar attempt to render the subject matter of an African man and an insane man in a normalized fashion. These groups of people have traditionally been ostracized from the societal whole and depicted, in unfavorable light.…

In the article “On Being Sane in Insane Places”, author D.L. Rosenhan recounts an experiment he conducted to test the consistency of psychiatric diagnoses. In this study, eight individuals were given the task of calling a psychiatric hospital and alledging that he or she had been hearing voices lately, specifically voices that were the same sex as the patient. No other differences in symptoms or history were made, besides minor altercations that would not influence diagnoseses, such as where the individual was employed. In the end, all were admitted into the different hospitals they called. Once inside the hospital, the patient did not continue to pretend to hear voices or possess any symptoms at all.…

After 4 hours of math, science and history it was finally time to get our stuff and walk over to the junior high for the 8th grade graduation rehearsal. I needed to go get my stuff from my locker with the other 150 kids that also needed their stuff. I fight through all those people and managed to get to my locker. I grabbed my backpack with my lunch and the book I’ve been reading “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler”. Now that everyone has their stuff, we started walking.…

The pain began slowly, pricking me with its sharp needles only while doing barre in ballet once a week. I ignored it, believing it to be normal, common discomfort that would soon go away, typical thoughts of a dancer whose entire sport is centered around “good pain”. Six months later, it had escalated to the degree that every step I took felt like an arrow to my knee. Dancing had become impossible, and it was determined that I should be taken to the orthopedist. The bland, brown and beige lobby became extraordinarily familiar as I waited two hours to be examined.…

As a criminal justice major, I found this chapter particularly interesting. I tend to wrestle with the insanity plea. I realize that there are some cases where it is beyond evident that the person was criminally insane. However, for the most part I tend to see it as a cop out. I see it as a way for the defense to get their client freed from responsibility.…

With cellophane wrapped untidily around my head and garbed in the utmost ill fitted white spandex clothing, I performed in my first musical. Being on stage somehow translates into being unapologetic and living purely through instinct for me. So, in moments of my delivery of the choreography flawlessly, putting all the other lollipops to shame, a star was born. From a young age, my brown hair and urge to wear plaid button-up shirts with sweatpants made me different from the crowd; I always seemed to find myself alone on the playground. I was the boy no one really wanted to talk to unless it was to get some gum.…

The ray of light from the flashlight casts a luminescent glow on the ground, allowing us to keep a watchful eye on where we are stepping. As we walk, I feel the crunch of breaking thin ice, and the stickiness of the mud under my feet. I smell the crisp, clean aroma of the morning air. We weave our way through the woods trying to avoid puddles of unfrozen water, and logs that are in the way of the trails we have made. Finally, I spot the…

Just below my feet on the damp pavement, I caught a glimpse of what appeared to be the tall, slim shadow of someone behind me. The footsteps were slow at first, just about matching my own nervous strides, then began to speed up. Panicking, I quickened my pace in hopes of gaining some ground over who- or whatever was behind me on the dimly lit road that Halloween evening. Earlier that night I had attended a Halloween party where there were plenty of people in a well-lit area, all of whom were celebrating the eerie holiday with costumes, music, and food, but the whole time I couldn’t help but think about my walk home afterwards. What I saw and heard during that trek through the darkness was totally up to how well I managed to restrain my imagination…
